BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell shot a season-best 50 percent from the
floor, posting four in double figures, but surrendered 20
turnovers, as UNC Wilmington clipped the Lady Camels, 83-80 inside
the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Camels fall to 0-7 on the season with their fourth loss by
six or less points this year. UNCW improves to 5-2 on the season.
The loss was just the 15th in the 45-game series between
Campbell and UNCW. The Seahawks are now 5-17 in Buies Creek.
Senior Lauren
Yesh led the way for the Lady Camels with 13 points and seven
rebounds. The Evart, Mich. native added a pair of steals and two
assists in the loss. Jazmine
Cooper, a sophomore forward, also tallied 13 with six
boards.

Cloxton and Monique
Spry both registered 10 points, notching six and three assists
each. Spry also gathered four rebounds while Cloxton added two
steals. Courtney
Cannon and Tonisha
Baker both tallied nine points. Baker, a sophomore guard,
recorded six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Freshman
forward Ashley
James gathered eight points in just seven minutes.
Leading UNCW was senior center Martha White with a game-high 17
points, adding nine rebounds. Freshman guard Alisha Andrews posted
15 points with six assists, hitting 3-of-5 from distance. Kristen
Hanzer, Jessica Freeman and Brittany Blackwell all registered 12 in
the win.
UNCW led by as many as eight in the opening frame, taking the 28-20
lead on a Mya Levels jumper with 6:42 remaining. The Lady Camels
cut the lead to four on a Baker lay-in with 1:22 to play in the
frame, giving the game its 39-35 first half score.
By the 15:05 mark in the second half, the UNCW lead ballooned to 10
with an 11-6 run, capped with a Hanzer layup. The Lady Camels
whittled that lead back to four, however, with a 10-4 streak that
included a Baker three with 11:36 remaining.
After UNCW again extended its lead to eight at the 8:44 mark,
Campbell answered with a 10-3 run, with eight scored by Cloxton.
The junior connected on both free throw attempts, and after a
Martha White basket, nailed back-to-back threes to close the gap to
64-61 with 7:48 on the clock.
At the 5:22 mark, the Lady Camels took their first lead since
scoring the game's first basketball, 2-0, when Spry buried a three
from the corner to put Campbell on top 69-68, forcing a UNCW
timeout.
Trading baskets, Spry again put the Lady Camels on top with 47
second to play, 80-79, driving for a lay-in on a fast break.
Neither team connected on a field goal for the remainder of the
game, but UNCW hit 4-of-4 attempts from the free throw line.
Campbell, meanwhile, went 0-for-2, resulting in the 83-80 Seahawk
win.
The Lady Camels will be in action again on Tuesday, hosting North
Carolina Central in the first of two Education Days on the campus
of Campbell University, Dec. 14. Local elementary school students
will enjoy a Campbell women's basketball game on their trip to
Campbell. Game time is slated for 11:45 a.m.
