Women's Hoops Opens A-Sun Play at Upstate

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell will kick off its Atlantic Sun slate in Spartanburg, S.C. on Thursday, Dec. 16, taking on USC Upstate inside the newly renovated Hodge Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Lady Camels, at 1-7 overall this season, are coming off a 67-61 win over North Carolina Central on Tuesday, the first of two Education Days the University will host this season. A sellout crowd of 3,095 were in attendance for the game, a program record.

Senior forward Lauren Yesh scored all of her team-high 12 points in the second half, adding eight rebounds and three assists. Ashley James and Amanda O'Neill joined Yesh in double figures with 11 points each. James, a freshman forward, notched a double-double with 14 rebounds, a team season high, while O'Neill chipped in five boards.

Sophomore guard Tonisha Baker tacked on nine points and four rebounds, while Kate Cloxton registered eight points and a season-high eight assists. Monique Spry gathered six points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Baker leads the Lady Camels on the season at 10.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while Yesh adds 9.1 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds a contest.

Upstate, at 3-4 overall and 1-0 in A-Sun games, suffered an 87-55 loss at No. 11 Ohio State on Tuesday. Kim Roach led the way for the Spartans in Columbus with 15 points, hitting all-six of her field goal attempts. Madison Webb and Chelsea McMillan also posted eight points each in the loss.

Sophomore Tee'Ara Copney leads Upstate on the season at 14.3 points per game, while McMillan adds 14.0 and 10.6 rebounds. Lauren McRoberts averages double figures with 10.6 points per game.

The Spartans boast the A-Sun's second-best scoring offense at 69.0 points per game, but also allow the league's most points per outing at 82.4.

Campbell leads the all-time series with Upstate 4-2, dating back to 2008, the Spartans' first year in the A-Sun. The teams split meetings last season, with each squad winning on the road. The Lady Camels edged Upstate 75-72 in Spartanburg a year ago, with Yesh leading the way on the strength of 15 points and nine rebounds. McMillan totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds in the game for the Spartans.

In Buies Creek, Upstate came away with the 76-74 win, as Copney and McMillan combined for 32 points. McMillan added 16 rebounds while Copney tacked on five assists and four steals. Spry paced the Lady Camels, who totaled four in double figures, with 13 points.

The Lady Camels will remain on the road in their next contest, heading to East Tennessee State on Dec. 20.
