BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After an
11-day layoff for Christmas break, the Campbell wrestling team
returns to the mat as they travel to Greensboro for the two-day
Southern Scuffle tournament Wednesday and Thursday.
Competition inside
the Greensboro
Coliseum Special Events Center is slated for a 10 a.m. start
Wednesday.
"It's one of the toughest
tournaments in the country, so it's great for us to have the
opportunity to get to wrestle against some great teams," said
first-year head coach Joe Boardwine. "We want to get
experience and to get as many match wins as possible.
I think everyone's really excited about it; they've been working
hard and this is a good opportunity for our kids to see where
they're at."
The prestigious 34-team
tournament features seven teams ranked in this week's
Intermat Top 25 Poll, including the top-ranked Cornell Big
Red. Cornell won the team title in 2009, narrowly
edging Minnesota.
Minnesota (No. 4) and Penn
State (No. 7) are ranked in the top ten, and Michigan (No. 16),
Hofstra (No. 18), Kent State (No. 20), and Virginia (No. 25) are
also ranked foes participating in the tournament.
Over 50 nationally-ranked
individuals are expected to participate in the event.
The 125, 184, and 197-pound weight classes could feature up to
eight ranked wrestlers while the 133 and 141 pound spots could each
have seven.
Campbell is 0-3 in dual
competition this year and finished seventh in the Navy Classic in
its first team tournament of the season.
