GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Campbell wrestling team traveled to
Greensboro for the Southern Scuffle on Wednesday and Thursday, and
finished 33rd with five team points for the
tournament.
Senior Jake
Fose and junior Justin
Sparrow each won matches for the Camels at the prestigious
tournament, which featured seven Top-25 teams from across the
country. Nick
Rex also had considerable success while wrestling unattached,
winning a pair of bouts.
Top-ranked Cornell and No. 7 Penn State each earned a share of the
team title, with both squads amassing 151.5 team points. Cornell
won at least a share of the title for the third-straight year.
Wrestling at 157 pounds, Fose lost his opening bout to Edinboro's
Johnny Greisheimer, but registered a pair of pins in the
consolation bracket. He defeated Liberty's Justin Krop by fall in
4:38 in the first round of consolations, and subsequently
dispatched North Carolina's Justin Rice in just 1:59 before
dropping his next bout.
Sparrow lost a pair of matches wrestling at 174 pounds, but also
competed in the 184 pound weight class, where he won his opening
bout with a 5-3 decision over Princeton's Michael Erdman. Sparrow
dropped his next two contests, however, to Cornell's Steve Bosak
and The Citadel's Josh Tuck.
Rex, wrestling unattached at 165 pounds, dropped a tight 5-2
decision to Penn State's Nick Fischer in his opening match, but
rebounded in the consolation bracket with an 8-2 victory over
Ohio's Steve Wilson. He advanced past Indiana's Ross Powell after
a medical forfeit before falling to Kent State's Sli Bosterman 4-0
in the next round.
Tanner
Bidelspach, Gabe Gardner, Brad
Merriman, Joel Caudill, Ryan
Ham, John
Merickel, and Parker
Burns also competed for the Camels in the tournament. Dominique
Whitfield also wrestled unattached for Campbell.
CU returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Boone for duals
with Appalachian State and No. 8 Virginia Tech. Action is slated
for a 5:30 p.m. start.
