Brittany Stanley Chosen As Candidate For 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award For Softball

Overland Park, KS - Campbell senior pitcher Brittany Stanley (West Lafayette, Ind./West Lafayette) has been chosen as one of 30 softball student-athletes for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, it was announced Wednesday, Feb. 10 by Lowe's. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition.

The word "CLASS" is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School TM, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact in their communities. The award was originally launched during the 2001-02 season in response to the trend of college basketball players leaving school early to pursue professional careers. Veteran sportscaster Dick Enberg conceived the award.

The 30 softball candidates represent 29 different schools with Northwestern being represented twice. Stanley is one of two players from the Atlantic Sun to be on the list along with Lipscomb's Kellie Sirus. Stanley is one of 11 pitchers on the list. A total of 17 different conferences are represented with the SEC and Big Ten both having five selections.

Lowe's, an official Corporate Sponsor of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award TM winner at the NCAA Women's College World Series ® in June.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of classroom, character, community and competition.

This marks the fourth year for the softball division of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Florida pitcher Stacey Nelson received the award in 2009 and Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher took home the honor in 2008. In 2007, Arizona outfielder Caitlin Lowe won the inaugural softball award.

Stanley is coming off a memorable 2009 season in which she was named the Atlantic Sun's Pitcher of the Year, A-Sun Tournament MVP and led Campbell to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. On the year, Stanley went 19-5 with a 1.79 ERA. This season the senior right handed pitcher has already been named the A-Sun Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Stanley has earned a 3.71 grade-point average as a business administration major. She has been a member of the Atlantic Sun's All-Academic team in each of the last three seasons. She has also been named an NFCA All-America Scholarship Athlete in those same three seasons.
