Charleston, S.C. - The Campbell softball team (1-2-1) lost their
first game of the day to Charleston Southern (3-2-1) by a 10-6
count and the tied in the second game 2-2 on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at
Lady Bucs Field in Charleston, S.C. The second game was called on
account of darkness.
Lauren Stephan had four hits and RBIs to lead the Campbell
offensive attack on the day
First Game
Charleston Southern's Sondra Vetter (3-2) was able to outpitch
Campbell freshman Brittany Arnn (0-1). Vetter threw a complete game
and allowed 11 hits with three strikeouts. Arnn allowed eight runs
in 3.2 innings pitched. She struck out seven with three walks.
Charleston Southern scored three in the first inning with the big
blow being the two-run home run from Erin Kegley. Megan Hall
started the rally for CSU with a walk. She came all the way in to
score on the throwing error from the Campbell defense off the
attempted sacrifice bunt from Shayla Cullum. Kegley then came
through with her home run to left field to score Cullum and
increase the margin to 3-0.
The Lady Bucs added three more in the second. The first run scored
on Hall's RBI single. A wild pitch scored the second run with
Lombard coming in to score. The third was scored on the sacrifice
fly from Kegley. It was Kegley's third RBI of the afternoon.
CU caught an unlucky break in their half of the third when junior
Katie Hinton's potential hit up the middle with senior Robin
Leathers at second base ricocheted off Vetter and right to the Trea
Steele at second for the third out of the inning.
The Camel threatened in the fourth with junior Lauren Stephan and
senior Robin Leathers starting the inning with a double and single,
respectively. The potential rally was squashed with Vetter's
retiring the next three in order to keep the score 6-0 CSU.
Charleston Southern added a pair to the lead in the fourth inning
on Jana Matthews' two-out two-run RBI single.
CU rallied for three in the fifth. Leathers reached on a fielder's
choice, Hinton singled off the third baseman and Stephan hit a
Vetter's offering over the wall. It was Stephan's second home run
of the season.
CSU quickly got two runs back on Melissa Adams' two-run RBI double
in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 10-3.
The Camels used a few CSU miscues in the seventh to score a three
runs and bring the tying run to the plate, but the rally was
stopped on an infield pop up double play. Cassie Webb and Keeli
Michael both drove in a run in the inning for Campbell.
Game
Two
Kegley again gave CSU the early lead in the second game with her
second home run of the day in the second inning.
The Camels used a double steal to manufacture a run and tie the
game in the fourth. Christina Melton started the rally with a
single. A single by Webb moved her to second. A fielder's choice
moved to her to third. Then the double steal with junior Amanda
Miller and Melton produced a run with Melton crossing the plate
ahead of the tag.
The Camels took the lead in the top of the fifth. Katie Hinton
walked, stole second and came in to score on Stephan's single to
right center.
The Lady Bucs tied the game up with a run in the sixth. Hall
doubled to lead off the frame. She took third on a wild pitch and
came in to score when Kegley singled to center.
The Camels will next be in action over the weekend and head down to
Gainesville, Fla. to take on East Carolina at the Lipton
Invitational on Feb. 19 at 11:15 a.m.
