GAINESVILLE, Fla. -The Campbell softball team (1-4-1) lost their
second game of the day at the Lipton Invitational in Gainesville,
Fla. to host school No. 5/9 Florida (5-1) by a 7-0 count on Friday,
Feb. 19 at Seashole Pressly Stadium. The Camels are now on a
five-game winless streak. The Gators hit a school stadium record
five home runs in the game.
Florida's Stephanie Brombacher (4-1) was strong in the circle for
the Gators. She struck out 11 and allowed two hits. Christina
Melton (1-1) took the loss for Campbell and allowed five runs
in five plus innings with a strikeout.
The Gators struck first with a run in the second inning. Corrie
Brooks doubled off the right field wall to start the rally. An
attempted sacrifice bunt that was misplayed by the CU pitcher
and led to Brooks getting to third and Megan Bush reaching first.
The Gators then put both runners in motion and stole second and
home with Brooks coming in to score the first run of the game.
Tiffany DiFelice then walked and Michelle Moultrie loaded the bases
with her bunt single. Melton was able to escape with only one run
allowed and helped herself by starting a double play to end the
inning.
Senior Cassie Webb picked up the
first Campbell hit with a two-out single in the bottom of the
second into right field.
Florida's Megan Bush led off the fourth inning with a blast to
center field. It was her first of the season and 30th of her
career. That moves her into sole possession of fourth place on
Florida's all-time home run list. Moultrie followed, after a line
out, with a long fly of her own to increase the lead to 3-0.
CU junior Lizzie Goldbach punched a
double to the gap in the fifth inning for the team's second hit,
but she was stranded at the base.
Bush led off the sixth with her second home run of the game to
increase the score to 4-0. DeFelice followed it up with a blast of
her own to push the deficit to five. The Camels then switched their
pitcher to senior Brittany Stanley. Kelsey
Horton made it a trio with home runs in the inning with her blast
to left field. Horton's hit was the first hit of her career.
Junior Katie Hinton picked up the
third Campbell hit with her single through the left side to lead
off the sixth.
The Gators scored the last run of the game on Bruder's home run to
center field for the seventh run of the game in the seventh
inning.
The Camels will continue play in the Lipton Invitational on
Saturday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. against Marshall.
