JACKSONVILLE, FLA.-Jacksonville scored 23 points off 20 Campbell
turnovers to squeak past the Lady Camels, 63-57, in Atlantic Sun
women's basketball action Thursday night inside Veteran's Memorial
Arena.
Campbell falls to 14-14 on the season with a 9-10 A-Sun record,
while JU moves to 9-18 and 8-11 in league play.
Freshman guard Tonisha
Baker led the way for the Lady Camels with 12 points on 6-of-9
shooting, adding four rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists.
Lauren Yesh and Kate
Cloxton followed with 11 points apiece. Yesh also tallied four
rebounds while Cloxton chipped in two steals.
Freshman post Jazmine
Cooper gathered nine points with three rebounds. Senior center
Ashley Williamson paced
Campbell on the boards with eight.
Gigi Thomas led four Dolphins in double figures with a game-high 14
points, adding five steals. Drameka Griggs tallied 13 points with
five assists and three blocks. Ashanti Williams and Desarae Johnson
added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Down 25-21 with 1:57 remaining, back-to-back Cloxton threes sparked
an 8-2 Campbell run to end the half, giving the Lady Camels a 29-27
advantage at the break. Cloxton paced Campbell with eight points in
the stanza. Yesh also notched five, while Baker tallied four
points, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Ashanti Williams led
the Dolphins in the half with seven.
After the break, JU reeled off a 7-2 run, capped off by a Griggs
three at the 17:15 mark. By the 8:14 mark, the Dolphins led by
seven, but a two minute JU drought combined with eight straight
from the Lady Camels, including the Yesh put-back to give Campbell
the 50-49 lead.
A Maggie Wilson three put the Dolphins back on top 52-50, but Yesh
answered for the Lady Camels, connecting on another bucket inside
to force the tie at the 4:06 mark. The Johnson field goal at the
3:55 mark was their last of the game, but a 10-of-12 effort from
the charity stripe secured the 63-57 JU win.
The Lady Camels connected on just 6-of-19 from the free throw line,
while shooting .375 percent from the field. After shooting .379
percent in the first half, Jacksonville warmed up to .500 in the
final period to edge the Lady Camels.
The Lady Camels will wrap up the regular season at North Florida on
Saturday, with tipoff slated for 4:30 p.m.
