KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Senior Cassie Webb led the offensive
attack with four RBIs, including her first career home run, as
Campbell's softball team (4-13-1) defeated Liberty (9-5) by a 10-4
score on Saturday afternoon on the first day of the Tennessee
Invitational at Sherri Lee Softball Stadium.
Katie Woodcock (2-0) came in
relief to earn the victory for Campbell. The junior went 3.2
innings out of the bullpen with five strikeout. The loss went to
Liberty's Katrina Johnson (1-2) who allowed three runs in two
innings worked.
The Camels scored first with four runs in the second inning. Junior
Lauren Stephan started the
rally with a short single to right center. Senior Robin
Leathers and sophomore Taylor McGee then walked to
load the bases. Junior Amanda Miller then poked a
sacrifice fly to right field to score Stephan for the game's first
run. The rains began to fall and the rain delay lasted for 54
minutes. Webb stepped to the plate after the delay and smacked a
three-run home run. The home run was the first of the senior's
career.
The CU offense continued in the third when junior Katie
Hinton led off the frame with double to the gap. She came in to
score the team's fifth run of the day on Christina Melton's
double. Leathers then pushed a single through the middle to score
Melton.
Liberty started a rally in the fourth when Danielle Howard and
Jenny Law were able to draw back-to-back walks. After a pop out,
Kelly Strickland hit her sixth home run of the season to cut the
deficit in half. J'nae Jefferson made it back-to-back blasts and
hit her second home run of the year. Junior Katie Woodcock then
came in the game for Campbell and retired the next two in order
with two strikeouts to keep the score at 6-4.
CU added a few insurance runs in the sixth. McGee led off the
inning with her second blast of the season. Miller then walked and
scored all the way from first on Webb's double. The run driven in
was the fourth of the day for the senior. Michael then walked and
freshman Sarah
Forgacs reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Hinton then
punched a single up the middle to score pinch runner Woodcock and
Michael with the ninth and 10th runs of the game for CU.
The Camels will continue play in the Tennessee Invitational and
takes on No. 19 Tennessee in a 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday
evening.
