Women's Tennis Remains Perfect in A-Sun Play with Victory Over Mercer

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell University women's tennis team took an early advantage by winning the doubles point and it became the deciding factor as the Camels defeated Mercer, 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Nisbet Tennis Center.

Campbell earned its fifth straight victory and improved to 8-3 overall including a perfect 4-0 mark in Atlantic Sun play. Mercer fell to 3-4 and 0-3 in conference action.

The Camels got the afternoon started by taking two of three doubles matches. Blanca Saenz/Anais Gomar made quick work of Sarah Hanna/Stephanie Cohen by defeating the Mercer duo 8-0.

In number one doubles, the Mercer team of Jennifer Lada/Amalia Bugge defeated Cristina Garcia/Ana Surviladze, 8-5, to even up the doubles matches.

The deciding point came in the number two position as the Campbell duo of Lisa Sutton/Borislava Nikolova held off a rally from Anna Wieslander/Priscilla Dias in a tiebreaker, 9-8. Sutton/Nikolova held a decisive 7-3 advantage before dropping the next four games to even things back up. The Campbell duo remains a perfect 8-0 during dual play at the number two doubles position.

Sutton was also victorious in singles action as she defeated Wieslander in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Sutton has now won six matches in a row at number one singles. She now owns an 8-3 dual singles record.

Saenz also earned a straight set victory as she knocked off Bugge, 6-1, 7-5 at the number three position. Saenz has now won five straight and is a perfect 4-0 in A-Sun play. Nikolova earned the clinching victory for Campbell as she knocked off Priscilla Dias, 7-6, 6-4 at the number four position.

Campbell returns to action on Tuesday as they host George Washington in non-conference action. The match is set for 2:30 p.m.
