CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's Blanca Saenz claimed her
second Atlantic Sun Player of the Week award after going 3-0 at No.
3 singles and 2-0 in No. 3 doubles against an A-Sun opponent and
non-conference foes, the conference office announced
Wednesday.
Saenz started out the week with a victory versus Hampton's Barenese
Myers Friday in helping Campbell to a 6-0 victory. Saenz then
defeated Mercer's Amalia Bugge, 6-1, 7-5, as the Camels defeated
the Bears, 4-3. Saenz knocked off Dorota Lysienia of George
Washington, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, to help Campbell earn a narrow 4-3
victory to close the week.
"Blanca who is one of our three seniors and in past two years has
played primarily at the number one position struggled in the fall
but certainly seems to have found her form again and is playing
very well," said Campbell Head Coach David Johnson.
Saenz also teamed with Anais Gomar to earn a
perfect doubles record on the week. The duo defeated Mercer's pair
of Sarah Hanna/Stephanie Cohen, 8-0, before knocking off the George
Washington team of Michele Style/Hilary Kustoff, 8-4. The Campbell
duo boasts wins in four consecutive doubles matches and the Camels
now hold wins in six successive matches.
The Madrid, Spain native owns a 7-3 dual singles record on the
season including a perfect 4-0 in A-Sun play. The senior is also
6-3 in doubles play while teaming with Anais Gomar. The duo is
also perfect in conference doubles play.
Campbell currently owns a 9-3 overall record that includes a
perfect 4-0 mark in A-Sun play. The team is also in the middle of
a six match winning streak that dates back to February 26. The six
match winning streak is the longest Campbell women's tennis streak
since the 2007 team reeled off eight straight victories from
January 27 to February 28.
"Her presence on the court in doubles and singles has certainly
allowed our team to have the recent success they have had," said
Coach Johnson. "I am happy for her that her effort and attitude are
recognized in this manner and we will continue to rely on her
throughout the remainder of the season."
Saenz earned A-Sun player of the week honors in February of her
sophomore season after she won two singles matches and a doubles
match during the week, for her first player of the week honor. The
player of the week honor is also the first for a Campbell women's
tennis player this season.
Campbell returns to action on Friday as they hit the road to take
on UNC Asheville in non-conference action. The match is set to
begin at 1 p.m.
