Baseball stays busy with five games in five days

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell looks to continue their good fortunes at Taylor Field as the Fighting Camels will stay at home this week while welcoming in three different opponents to play five contests in Buies Creek. The matchups include a Tuesday tilt against Xavier, a Wednesday evening game with in-state rival UNC Wilmington and finally a three game series against Savannah State on Friday and Saturday.

Campbell is coming off an 2-2 week that included a narrow loss to ACC foe NC State in a midweek tilt as well as going 2-for-3 against North Carolina A&T. The Campbell offense has picked up right where it left off in 2009 as they lead the Atlantic Sun in four statistical categories; stolen bases, sacrifice bunts, hit by pitch and doubles. The Fighting Camels also place second in the A-Sun in RBI, hits, runs scored, on base percentage and batting average.

The first opponent for the Fighting Camels will be the Muskeeters of Xavier who visit Taylor Field at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. Xavier holds a 1-0 series lead over Campbell as they took the only meeting of the two, 5-3, in 1998. The Fighting Camels sit at 25-37 overall against current Atlantic 10 opponents and 3-1 against A10 opponents in the Greg Goff era.

Xavier currently sits at 1-5 on the season after dropping three contests to SEC opponent Tennessee and then going to Atlanta and losing two contests and winning one in a series to Georgia Tech. Last season the Musketeers won the A10 championship and qualified for the NCAA Regional where they eventually bowed out to the Rice Owls.

The Musketeers are lead by a trio of batters that have all tallied above a .300 batting average on the young campaign. Bobby Freking leads all hitters with a .333 average with a double, a home run and four RBI to his credit. Drew Schmidt is batting .313 and John McCambridge has posted a .300 average six games in.

UNC Wilmington is the next opponent that Campbell will face off against. The Seahawks visit Taylor Field on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled to be at 6:00 p.m. UNCW holds a 39-70-1 series advantage over Campbell in a series that dates back to 1963; the only campaign that these two teams didn't face off against each other was in 2009. The last time these two teams faced off was in 2008 when the two split a home and home series with each team winning on the road.

The Seahawks sit at 3-3 after taking 2-of-3 from A-Sun foe Jacksonville in the season opener for both teams. UNCW then returned home to host the Hughes Brothers Challenge last weekend where they defeated Morehead State and dropped two tilts to Lehigh and Liberty. Last season the Seahawks finished 31-23 and made a run to the CAA championship game where they lost to Georgia State 12-10.

UNCW looks to two batters and a pitcher for their statistical leadership. Michael Rooney has batted .320 on the season and Grayson Evans has batted at a .316 clip with two doubles and a home run. On the mound the UNCW ace that has emerged is Cameron Roth who has pitched 10.1 innings while posting on a 2.61 ERA and holding opposing batters to a meager .200 average.

This weekend Campbell will face off against the Tigers from Savannah State in a three game weekend set. These two will face off on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and will finish the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. 2009 was the first time that Savannah State and Campbell faced off with each other as the Fighting Camels swept the Tigers in a two game set 12-10 and 18-1.

The Tigers currently sit at 1-7 on the 2010 season with a victory against Division II opponent Clark Atlanta. So far the Tigers have dropped six contests against Division I opponents including a three game set to Central Florida as well as dropping all three games in the Savannah State Baseball Classic against foes such as Delaware State, Norfolk State and Florida A&M.

Savannah State boasts a powerful offense, one that is currently batting at a .314 clip through eight games; they have also stolen 22 bases on the campaign. The Tigers are led by the individual efforts of Emory Barkley who is batting at a .560 clip with a double and a home run that have led to 4 RBI. Blake Lee, Dexter Kelly, Darien Campbell, Brandon Webster and Dondregius Jackson are all batting over .300 for Savannah State.

Live stats will be available for all five contests on gocamels.com.
