BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (2-7-1) has one of
their busiest weeks of the season on tap this week. The Camels are
slated to play a total of seven games. CU starts the week and
returns home for the first time in nearly two weeks with a pair of
games against Saint Bonaventure on Tuesday, March 2, at 4 p.m.
Campbell will then head down to Baton Rouge, La. to participate in
the Purple & Gold Challenge from March 5-7. CU starts the
weekend of action with a game against Syracuse on Friday, March 5
at noon cst. The Camels will then take on South Alabama later that
afternoon at 2:30 p.m. cst. Campbell takes on host school LSU on
Saturday, March 6, starting at 1:30 p.m. cst. before starting pool
play in the tournament.
The Camels were able to snap an eight-game winless streak with a
victory over College of Charleston on Saturday, Feb. 27 by a 7-5
score. CU used strong hitting and relief pitching from Katie
Woodcock to get the victory. Woodcock drove in pair of runs
with a double and also pitched 2.2 innings with five strikeouts.
Fellow junior Amanda Miller also had a
strong pair of games with three hits, a double and three RBIs. On
the season, junior Lauren Stephan is leading
the offensive attack for Campbell with three home runs, eight RBIs
and 13 hits. The Phoenix, Ariz. native is ranked fourth in the
conference in batting average (.406), home runs and total bases
(25). Junior Katie Hinton is tied for
second on the league in walks (nine) and sixth in on-base
percentage (.472),
Saint Bonaventure (2-3) officially kicked off its 2010 season at
the UNCW Seahawk Classic over the weekend. The Bonnies started the
weekend tournament with a pair of losses but rallied to win two of
the last three games. In the team's three losses the run
differential has been a total of four runs. Senior Stephanie Narde
has been Saint Bonaventure's top hitter with a .400 batting average
and six hits. The top power threat is sophomore Brooke Frye, who is
tied for the team lead with a home run to go along with six RBIs.
Senior pitcher Sherri Thompson has been the top pitcher with a 1.09
ERA, and 26 strikeouts in 24.2 innings pitched. All 22 members of
the SBU softball are from the East Coast states of New York,
Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Camels lead the all-time series
with SBU by a 2-1 margin. The last time these two schools met was
in 2007 at a tournament hosted by Charleston Southern.
Syracuse (3-7) snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over
Cal State Fullerton at the prestigious Cathedral Classic on Sunday.
The Orange have played an ultra competitive schedule and have
already faced off with five teams that made the NCAA Tournament
last season. Two of the wins by SU this season have been shutout
victories over Bryant. Sophomore Stephanie Watts has been the
team's top hitter with a .345, 10 hits and five RBIs. Freshman
Veronica Grant is also hitting well with a .344 batting average,
four doubles and 11 hits. Hallie Gibbs leads the team with eight
RBIs. Senior Brittany Gardner has been the best pitcher with a 1.93
ERA. Sophomore Jenna Caira has already recorded 47 strikeouts in
33.1 innings pitched. This is the first time the Camels will face
off with Syracuse. The last time Camels took on a team from the Big
East Conference was during the 2008 with a game against Notre Dame
in a tournament hosted by Charleston Southern.
South Alabama (7-6) had its five-game winning streak snapped over
the weekend with a loss to No. 6/8 Georgia. Sophomore Marissa Boyd
is hitting .375 with 10 RBIs this year. Freshman Brittany Fowler
leads the team with 11 runs scored and 14 hits. Sophomore Haley
Hopkins already has six home runs and 13 RBIs among her 11 hits. In
the circle, Katy Neal is 2-0 with a 2.21 ERA. Senior Beth Pilgrim
has won four games with a 2.84 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 44.1
innings thrown. South Alabama has already defeated three teams that
are on the 2010 Campbell schedule with victories over Lipscomb
(3-2), Belmont (15-2) and Charleston Southern (8-3). This is the
first time that Campbell will face off with the Jaguars. Campbell
trails the all-time series with teams from Sun Belt Conference by a
47-20 margin.
Louisiana State (13-4) are once again one of the top teams in the
country and come into the week ranked No. 15/19. LSU has now won
eight games in a row and 11 out of its last 12. Senior Kristen
Shortridge leads the offensive attack with a .371 batting average,
12 runs, 23 hits and 14 stolen bases. Sophomore Ashley Langoni is
hitting .333 with five home runs, 13 RBIs, 10 runs scored and 32
total bases. The pitching for the Tigers has been outstanding and
they have a team ERA of 0.91. Senior Cody Trahan is 3-0 with a 0.30
ERA. Sophomore Brittany Mack is only 3-2 but has an ERA of 0.72.
Freshman Rachele Fico has won five games with a 1.15 ERA and 51
strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched. Shortridge has also spent some
time in the circle and is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA. This is also the
first time that Campbell has taken on the Tigers. CU trails the
all-time series with teams from the Southeastern Conference 18-2
including a 7-0 loss to then No. 5/9 Florida on Feb. 19.
After this weekend the Camels return again home briefly for two
games against North Carolina State on March 10 starting at 4 p.m.
The Camels will then hit the road for the Tennessee Tournament from
March 13-14 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The other teams in the field
are Liberty, Tennessee Tech and Tennessee.
