WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (9-15-1) hit three
home runs to defeat Winston-Salem State (2-9) 8-0 in the second
game of the doubleheader on Friday evening in Winston Salem, N.C.
The Camels have now won four in a row and six of the last eight
games.
Sophomore
Christina
Melton (4-4)
allowed just two hits in five innings of work with seven
strikeouts. Junior Lauren
Stephan made her
first appearance in the circle this season in the sixth inning and
struck out two. The loss went to Tiffany Burgess (1-4). She allowed
five runs in five innings of work.
Melton powered a deep home run to left field in the first to give
Campbell an early advantage. The home run was her first blast of
the season and gave the Camels a 1-0 advantage.
The score
stayed the same until Campbell scored two runs in the fifth inning.
Junior Amanda
Miller led off
the frame with a double down the line. Senior Robin
Leathers followed,
after the next two were retired, with her first home run of the
season.
CU scored
five in the sixth inning. Senior Cassie
Webb led off
the sixth with a double to left. Senior Brittany
Stanley then
unloaded with her first home run of the season to increase the
margin to 5-0. After a strikeout, junior Lizzie
Goldbach reached
on an error. Miller then followed with a solid single to center.
Melton followed with a single to short to load the bases. Redshirt
sophomore Amanda
Cline reached
on a bloop single to right to score Goldbach. The hit and run
driven in was the first of the season for Cline. Senior Ashton
Hardison picked up
a single to right to plate Miller and Melton with the seventh and
eighth runs of the game. The RBIs were the first and second of the
season for the senior.
The Camels now stay on the road to take on N.C. Central on
Saturday, March 20 beginning at 1 p.m.
