CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell men's tennis team gets set to host
Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson on Thursday and Friday, in the last
home conference matches of the season.
The Camels will host the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday
at 4 p.m. Campbell will then take on Stetson Friday at 1 p.m.
Campbell enters the weekend with a 13-5 overall record and a 5-2
mark in Atlantic Sun play. The Camels are coming off a road split
against Jacksonville and North Florida. Campbell defeated
Jacksonville 4-3 on Friday before falling to North Florida 6-1 on
Saturday.
Freshman David
Clavera led the Camels over the weekend with a perfect 2-0
singles record. A native of Barcelona, Spain, Clavera earned the
two victories while playing up a spot in the lineup at number
four. He had been playing most of the season at the number five
position. He currently owns a 13-4 (6-1 A-Sun) record in spring
singles play.
Davy Sum, the Atlantic Sun
Preseason Player of the Year continues to play well in the number
one position for the Camels. Sum is currently 14-2 (6-1 A-Sun) in
dual singles action and is just ten wins away from equaling the
all-time career wins leader in Campbell history. The junior from
Strasbourg, France has put up impressive numbers while dealing with
a nagging wrist injury throughout much of the season.
In doubles, Campbell is led by the team of Davy Sum/Dominik Kaniewski.
The duo currently ranks as the #56 ranked doubles team in the
nation. Sum/Kaniewski currently own a 12-2 (5-2 A-Sun) on the
season.
Campbell will open the week against Florida Gulf Coast on
Thursday. The Eagles come into the match with a 4-12 overall mark
and a 3-5 record in A-Sun play. FGCU comes into the match having
lost seven of their last eight matches. They most recently fell to
Mercer 4-3 in A-Sun play last Thursday.
The Eagles are led by the number one doubles team of Thibaud
Aime/Matthew Rock. The duo enters the match with a 12-3 (7-1
A-Sun) overall mark.
Aime and Rock have also been the most consistent performers for
FGCU in singles play. Aime sports a 9-9 (4-4 A-Sun) overall mark
in the number one position, while Rock is 7-9 (5-3 A-Sun) on the
season while playing at the number four position.
The Stetson Hatters enter the match Friday as winners of their last
nine contests. The Hatters sport an 18-3 (7-1 A-Sun) overall
record and are currently tied for second with ETSU in the Atlantic
Sun standings.
Stetson is led by sophomores Cesare Gallo and Maksim Levanovich.
Gallo comes into the match having won 17 straight matches and
enters with a 19-1 (8-0 A-Sun) overall singles mark while playing
at both the number three and four positions. Levanovich comes in
with an 18-2 (8-0 A-Sun) mark while playing in both the number one
and two positions. He is currently on a 13 match winning
streak.
Gallo and Levanovich also lead the Hatters in doubles play. The
team enters the match with a 15-3 (7-1 A-Sun) overall mark. Also,
the doubles team of Didrik Berg/Chris Swanteson has been hot as of
late, having won eight straight contests.
The Camels have already locked up a spot in the upcoming Atlantic
Sun Championship. The championship will be held in DeLand,
Florida, April 15-17. The field will be made up of the top six
teams in the league standings. Stetson, ETSU, UNF, and Campbell
have already clinched spots.
