BATON ROUGE, La. - The Campbell softball team (2-10-1) lost their
third consecutive game at the Purple & Gold Challenge on
Saturday, March 6. The Camels were defeated by No. 16 LSU (16-4) by
an 8-0 margin in five innings at Tiger Stadium.
Brittany Stanley (0-5) took
the loss for Campbell and allowed six runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
Cody Trahan (4-0) threw a gem for the Tigers. She allowed five hits
and struck out five.
After waiting until the seventh inning against South Alabama to get
their first hit the Camels lead off batter, freshman Sarah Forgacs,
promptly started the game with a single down the left field line.
After a Forgacs stolen base, the next three were retired in order
to keep the game scoreless though.
The Tigers offense got going early with two in the first. Ashley
Applegate singled up the middle, took second on a wild pitch and
moved to third on the single by Rachel Mitchell. Anissa Young then
followed with a single to plate Applegate and Mitchell for the
first two runs.
In the second, junior Keeli Michael's two-out
double down the right field line was wasted as the next batter was
struck out by Trahan.
LSU used the charity of the Camels in the second to tack on six
more. Jessica Mouse was hit by a pitch. Kirsten Shortridge and
Applegate followed with walks to load the bases. The bases were
cleared on Mitchell's double. After a strikeout, Courtney Hollier
drove in the next two with her double. The next run came in on
Mouse's RBI single. The Campbell pitching ended up hitting three
LSU batters in the inning and also walked three more.
CU picked up the third hit of the game on junior Katie
Hinton's single in the third.
The Campbell third baseman, Robin Leathers, made a nice
diving stop to end the Tigers third inning and keep LSU off the
board in a frame for the first time in the game.
The Camels fourth hit came in the fifth on freshman Sarah Ling's single
up the middle. After a force out, Hinton singled to right to put
two runners aboard. The threat was ended before any more damage
could be done.
The Camels will continue play in the Purple & Gold Challenge
and take on host school LSU again at 4 p.m. later this
afternoon.
