BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (2-12-1), after twice
having home doubleheaders weathered out over the last few weeks,
will again attempt to play their third and fourth home games of the
season at the Eakes Athletic Complex this week. The Camels are
slated to take on regional neighbor N.C. State on Wednesday, March
10 starting at 4 p.m. CU is then slated to travel to Tennessee to
participate in the Tennessee Invitational over the weekend from
March 13-14. The other teams in the tournament are Liberty,
Tennessee and Tennessee Tech.
The Camels are again looking to snap a sizable winless streak this
week and enter the week having dropped their last five games. CU's
offensive attack is being spearheaded by junior Lauren
Stephan. Stephan is hitting .333 with three home runs and nine
RBIs. Freshman Sarah
Forgacs is hitting .375 with six hits and two runs scored in
her last five games and was named to the Purple & Gold
Challenge All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Christina Melton
pitched well in the tournament and took No. 16 LSU into extra
frames with her four hit and one earned run performance. On the
year, the Charlotte native is 1-4 with a solid 2.86 ERA. She leads
the team with 36.1 innings pitched and 30 strikeouts.
North Carolina State (12-8) went 3-1 last weekend to win the
Wolfpack Challenge. Junior Bridget Desbois, sophomore Landon Warren
and senior Lindsay Campana were all named to the all-tournament
team, with Desbois picking up tournament MVP honors after hitting
.545 throughout the weekend. Warren leads the team with a .397
batting average on the season. Sophomore Stephanie Call has been
the top power threat with seven home runs and 19 RBIs. Campana is
8-2 on the season with a 0.52 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 67 innings
pitched. The Wolfpack have already hit 19 home runs while only
surrendered nine. N.C. State have already taken on Atlantic Sun
Conference rival North Florida and defeated the Osprey by a 7-0
margin in the team's first tournament of the season. North Carolina
State has been receiving top 25 votes over the last few weeks
including this week. The Camels have yet to defeat N.C. State in
six previous tries with the last games coming during the 2007
season.
Liberty (7-3) has won six of its last seven games over the last few
weekends with the only loss coming to then No. 23 Kentucky. Liberty
has a busy week on the docket and will take on Tennessee Tech on
Thursday and Tennessee on Friday before taking on Campbell on
Saturday. Sophomore Kelly Strickland leads the offensive charge for
LU with a .400 batting average, 12 hits and nine runs. Sophomore
Danielle Howard is heating up and is hitting .370 with four home
runs and 13 RBIs. Freshman Katrina Johnson has been the team's top
pitcher with a 3.60 ERA. Junior Tiffani Smith leads the team with
three wins and 28 strikeouts. In neutral site games this year the
Flames are 6-2. Liberty has already taken on and defeated Atlantic
Sun opponent USC Upstate by a 12-2 count earlier this season. LU
has used a strong offensive attack in the second and third innings
to defeat teams and are outscoring opponents 27-9 in those two
innings. The Camels own a 4-2 all-time record against the Flames
with the last meeting coming in 2004.
No. 19 Tennessee (13-4) has won seven in a row including all five
at the tournament the team hosted last weekend. The Lady Volunteers
open SEC play this week and takes on Mississippi State for three
games during the midweek. Tennessee is also scheduled to take on
Liberty on Friday on the first day of the tournament. Freshman
Raven Chavanne has started the season with a bang and leads the
team in batting average (.508), runs (20), hits (31), total bases
(41) and triples (2)...she is second in stolen bases (8). Chavanne
was named the SEC Player of the Week on Feb. 22 and Freshman of the
Week on March 1. Sophomore Jessica Spigner is the team's leading
home run (5) and RBI hitter (18). Tennessee has a team batting
average of .330 and currently has five regular members of the team
that are batting over .300. Freshman Ivy Renfroe has won six games
with a 2.47 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 45.1 innings thrown. Renfroe
was just named the SEC Freshman of the Week after posting a 0.81
ERA in 17.1 innings last week. Sophomore Cat Hosfield leads the
team with seven wins. The Camels have never taken on Tennessee but
the Lady Vols are the third member of the Southeastern Conference
that CU is playing this season. The Camels own an all-time record
of 2-20 all-time against SEC opponents.
Tennessee Tech (8-7) went 3-2 over the weekend at the Buzz Classic.
The Golden Eagles have already played five games against teams on
Campbell's schedule this season including four against Atlantic Sun
Conference teams. TTU split its two games with Mercer, were able to
defeat Kennesaw State and ETSU and lost to Kansas. Sophomore
Whitney Cummings has been the team's top hitter with a .366 batting
average, four home runs and 12 RBIs. Junior Callie Schmidt has also
played well with a .311 batting average, three home runs and 12
RBIs. Sophomore Holly Thomas has won five games with a 1.60 ERA and
49 strikeouts in 48 innings worked. Junior Maddie Schmissrauter has
won three games with a 1.48 ERA and 32 strikeouts. The Golden
Eagles are scheduled to take on Lipscomb in a doubleheader on
Tuesday and Liberty on Thursday before the Tennessee Invitational.
The Camels trail the all-time series with TTU by a 2-1 margin. CU
did defeat the Golden Eagles by an 8-4 score on opening day last
season at the Chattanooga Challenge. Since graduated senior Karlie
Love led the offensive charge with two home runs and five
RBIs.
After this weekend the Camels return home briefly and take on
Hampton for a doubleheader on March 16 starting at 4 p.m. CU is
then schedule to hit the road to take on Winston Salem State on
Friday, March 19 and North Carolina Central on Saturday, March
20.
