BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (15-23-1, 2-6 Atlantic
Sun) returns home to the Eakes Athletic Complex this week. The
Camels will start the 14-game homestand with a nonconference double
dip against Elon on April 14 starting at 4 p.m. The games against
the Phoenix are the final nonconference games this season. CU then
plays a pair of conference doubleheaders against North Florida on
April 16 at 4 p.m. and Jacksonville on April 17 at noon.
Campbell arrives at this week's game on a five-game skid. The
Camels dropped all four conference games last week on the team's
trip to Florida. On the trip Amanda Miller hit .364 with
four hits and two walks while freshman Sarah
Forgacs hit .333 with four hits. Junior Lauren Stephan tallied
four of Campbell's five RBIs on the last road trip. Forgacs is
among the conference leaders in batting average (.370), triples (2)
and stolen bases (14).
Elon (26-11) is a much improved team from last season when the team
went 15-32. The Phoenix took two of three games from conference
rival Furman over the weekend and currently standing in second
place in the Southern Conference. Junior college transfer Emerald
Graham has been a difference maker with a .370 batting average, 35
runs, 40 hits, seven home runs, 29 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
Freshman Tomeka Watson has also made a difference with a .369
batting average, 45 hits and 19 stolen bases. The pitching for Elon
has been solid with sophomore Erin O'Shea going 11-4 with four
shutouts. Junior transfer Lauren Taylor, who is from just down the
road in Lillington, has won 13 games and has 75 strikeouts in 101
innings pitched. The Camels hold a 21-6 advantage in the all-time
series against Elon including both games last season.
North Florida (23-22, 9-5 Atlantic Sun) comes into the weekend in
second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference in the team's first
year of eligibility for the A-Sun Tournament. UNF won both games
from East Tennessee State over the weekend. Junior Caroline Torre
has been the team's top hitter with a .309 batting average, 43 hits
and 24 RBIs. Sophomore Britanie Block has 13 doubles among her 39
hits this year. Devyn Findley is the key to the North Florida team.
Findley is one of the top pitchers in the conference and has won 17
games with a 1.94 ERA and 226 strikeouts in 187.1 innings pitched.
The Camels hold a slight 5-3 advantage in the series with UNF. The
two schools have split the series in each of the last three
seasons.
Jacksonville (27-15, 6-6 Atlantic Sun) completed a big sweep of USC
Upstate over the weekend. JU's Katie Kelly was named the Atlantic
Sun's Player of the Week this last week. Kelly has been the team's
top RBI threat with 31 RBIs to go along with 22 walks and 10
doubles. Redshirt sophomore Kayla Ouellet leads the team with a
.381 batting average, 27 walks, 53 hits and 15 stolen bases.
Freshman Olivia Kline is the top power threat with six home runs.
She also has won seven games with a 2.18 ERA. Senior Ashley Iveson
has been the top pitcher with 13 wins and 127 strikeouts in 113.1
innings worked. The Camels lead the all-time series with the
Dolphins by a 10-5 margin. CU has won six of the last seven games
from JU including five in a row. The Dolphins will take on
Bethune-Cookman in the midweek before coming to Buies Creek over
the weekend.
The Camels will continue the homestand next week and take on East
Tennessee State on April 22 at 4 p.m. and Lipscomb on April 24 at
noon. The games against Lipscomb will be Campbell's Senior Day for
the team's four senior members.
