Women's Tennis Advances to Semifinals of A-Sun Championships After Defeating Kennesaw State 4-2

DeLAND, Fla. - The fourth-seeded Campbell University women's tennis team won the crucial doubles point after earning two quick victories and also won three singles matches to defeat fifth-seeded Kennesaw State, Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Championships.

The duo of Blanca Saenz and Anais Gomar got Campbell off to a quick start by knocking off Mackenzie Swindall/Morgan Carney, 8-2. The Camels earned the doubles point after Lisa Sutton/Borislava Nikolova defeated Vera Shkundina/Ayano Tanaka, 8-3, in the top position.

Campbell increased its lead in singles competition as senior Cristina Garcia defeated Carney in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

Kennesaw State drew within one as Therese Lagerkvist defeated Gomar, 6-0, 6-1, at the number six position but Campbell answered right back as Saenz defeated Iesha Holton, 6-2, 6-2, at the number three spot.

After the Owls drew within one once again after a victory from Shkundina, the Camels closed out the contest with a tough three set victory from Ana Surviladze in the number five position. Surviladze knocked off Tanaka, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Surviladze also earned the clinching victory in last year's opening round win in the A-Sun Championships.

The Camels move to 15-8 on the season while, Kennesaw State concludes its season with a 12-11 overall mark.

Campbell advances to tomorrow's semifinal round as they will take on top-seeded ETSU beginning at 4:30. The Camels fell to the Bucs 6-1 earlier in the season at Johnson City. UNF will take on Stetson in the other semifinal match at 2 p.m. Each match of the tournament will feature live stats and video feed that can be accessed at GoCamels.com.
