BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's pitching staff allowed two runs in
14 innings to lead the softball team (17-25-1, 4-6 Atlantic Sun) to
a pair of 3-1 sweeps of second place North Florida (23-24, 9-7
Atlantic Sun) on Friday afternoon, April 16, at the Eakes Athletic
Complex.
Junior Lauren Stephan (1-2) start
the doubleheader by pitching a two-hit gem for CU. The Phoenix,
Ariz. native allowed just one unearned run and struck out a
season-high seven in picking up her first win of the season. In the
second game, senior Brittany Stanley (7-9)
continued the outstanding pitching and allowed just one run in her
five innings of work. She gave way to freshman Brittany Arnn, who
pitched the last two innings and didn't allow a ball runner with
two strikeouts. The save was the second of the season for Arnn.
The Campbell offense started the scoring early in the first game
and plated a pair of run in the opening inning. Freshman Sarah Forgacs and
junior Katie Hinton started the
rally with bunt singles. After a pair of strikeouts, junior Amanda
Miller delivered a bases-clearing double to left to score
Forgacs from second and Hinton all the way from first.
The game stayed the same with both pitchers throwing up zeros until
the Camels added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth
inning. Forgacs started the inning with a double to right center.
Forgacs moved to third on a pass ball and scored on sophomore Christina Melton's double to
right field.
UNF broke up the shutout in the seventh inning. Devyn Findley
reached on a fielders choice. Amy Kraus was called on to run for
Findley. A ground out and a wild pitch moved Kraus all the way to
third. She came in to score the unearned on the fielding error from
the CU third baseman.
Findley (17-13) was handed to loss for the Ospreys and allowed six
hits and three runs in six innings of work.
The Camels again broke through first in the second game and scored
the game's first run in the second inning. Senior Robin
Leathers walked and came in to score all the way from first on
Stanley's double to left.
Hinton started the CU third with an infield single. She moved to
second as Melton was walked. Sophomore Taylor McGee sacrificed both
runners up a base. Miller then laid down a perfect bunt with Hinton
charging in from third for the second run of the game.
Forgacs reached on a fielders choice in the fourth inning. She
moved to second on Hinton's infield single. A Melton walk loaded
the bases for sophomore Taylor McGee. McGee
delivered a single to center to score Forgacs with the second run
of the game.
UNF dented the scoreboard in the fifth inning on Britanie Block's
home run.
Arnn was brought in relief after a single by Findley to start the
inning and quickly induced a double play from Leathers to junior Keeli
Michael at second to senior Cassie Webb at first to
escape the dangerous situation.
UNF's Shania Dent (6-11) started and allowed three runs with seven
walks in the game's first four innings for the loss.
The Camels continue the homestand against conference rival
Jacksonville on Saturday, April 17 at noon.
