BUIES
CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell Baseball squad will finish up two week
long road trip with a short journey down Interstate 40 to face off
against UNC Wilmington on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
The Diamond Camels have been away from the friendly confines of
Taylor Field lately as they have made back-to-back trips to the
Sunshine State and playing six of the last seven away from Buies
Creek. Campbell did have a slight break last Tuesday with a
contest against non-conference opponent Norfolk State.
The series between the Fighting Camels and the Seahawks was one of
the longest consecutive series that Campbell had until the 45 year
streak was snapped last season. The Seahawks and the Camels had
faced off every year since 1964. UNC Wilmington holds a 50-34
advantage in the all-time series lead. This is the first game of a
home-and-home series between the two as the first installment of
the series was postponed due to snow in the Buies Creek area on
March 3.
UNC Wilmington comes in having dropped two of three to conference
rival George Mason this past weekend. The Seahawks were defeated
in games one and two but rebounded to take the series finale 5-4 on
Sunday.
Coming into the tilt on Wednesday the Seahawks hold a 15-12 record
with a 3-3 record in Colonial Athletic Association play. UNCW
holds a 12-9 record in non-conference action but an 8-8 record in
non-conference play while playing at Brooks Field. The Seahawks
haven't ventured away from Wilmington very often having played just
five contests away from home.
The Seahawks boast a strong lineup from the plate and on the bump.
At the plate UNCW will look to the bats of Hunter Ridge and Grayson
Evans. Ridge has posted a .371 average with eight doubles and 20
RBI while Evans has accumulated a .358 average coupled with 27 RBI
off of nine doubles and two home runs. Overall as a team UNCW has
a .303 batting average.
UNCW has a team ERA of 4.59 led by the efforts of Cameron Roth and
Justin Bradley who post a team best 2.42 and 2.67 ERA
respectively. Campbell will likely face off against Steven Davis
who has posted a 9.24 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched but has started
three contests for the Seahawks.
The Fighting Camels are looking to get back onto the winning side
of things after dropping all three tilts to conference rival
Stetson this past weekend. Campbell has posted a 13-4 record in
non-conference play and a 1-1 record in non-conference play while
on the road.
Campbell's probable starter will likely be either left hander Jeff
Rydman or righty Ben Brown. Rydman has a 2-0 record after pitching
21 innings in eight appearances with four being starts. Rydman has
worked his way to a 6.43 ERA while striking out 13 and only walking
five. Brown has a 7.02 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched. Brown has
registered a 2-3 record while holding opponents to a .292 average
against.
Following this midweek contest Campbell will return home to face
off against Atlantic Sun member Florida Gulf Coast in a three game
set. Game one is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. on Friday
afternoon with a doubleheader to follow on Saturday at 1:00
p.m.
