FT. MYERS, Fla. - Campbell's softball team (15-20-1, 2-3 Atlantic
Sun) fell to Florida Gulf Coast (19-24, 7-4 Atlantic Sun) by a 7-2
count in the first game of the conference doubleheader on Thursday
evening in Ft. Myers. The Camels had seven hits and stranded eight
runners in the first game.
Senior Brittany Stanley (6-8) was
tagged with the loss for Campbell and allowed five runs in the
first 2.1 innings twirled. Junior Lauren Stephan came in
allowed two unearned runs with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings
thrown. The win went to Catherine McDaniel (9-11), who went the
distance for FGCU.
The Camels scored first with a run in the first inning. Freshman Sarah
Forgacs reached on a bunt single, stole second, moved to third
on a pass ball and came in to score as sophomore Christina
Melton got herself into a run down.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the frame on Mariah
Fernandez's single through the right side that scored Jessica Gray
and Heather O'Mara.
CU tied the game in the third inning. Senior Robin Leathers drew a
lead off walk. She moved to second on Forgacs single up the middle.
A double play ground out moved Forgacs to second and eliminated
Leathers at third. Taylor McGee then hit a
chopper to short that the FGCU shortstop threw away and allowed
Forgacs to score from second on and tie the game at two all.
FGCU again took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Lauran Ziegler
tripled to the corner in right and was followed by a home run from
Gray. O'Mara then doubled to the gap. Fernandez walked to move
O'Mara to third. FGCU then stole second and home. The ball was
thrown over the bag at second and got past the CU centerfielder to
allow Fernandez to score the fourth run of the inning.
The Camels threatened in the sixth inning. Junior Amanda
Miller reached on an infield single. Stephan then singled
through the right side. Senior Cassie Webb was hit by a
pitch to load the bases. The next three were retired in order on a
pair of strikeouts and line out.
The Eagles plated an unearned run on Nicole Boswell's RBI ground
out in the sixth inning.
