BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell football program wraps up the 2010
spring schedule with the third annual Orange-White game on
Saturday, April 10 at 12 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The intra-squad scrimmage is free to the public and will feature
the offense and defense going against each other in a game-type
scrimmage. The first half will feature two 15-minute quarters with
the second half's quarters being scaled back to 12-minutes each.
The offense and defense will compete against each other for points
in a system devised by Coach Steele and the coaching staff. The
game is expected to allow the team to finish its 15 spring practice
with a bang and be a sneak preview for the CU Football Fans to the
2010 season.
"We have been pleased with the progress that we have made through
out our practices during the spring," Coach Steele explained. "We
set numerous goals at the start of the off-season and at this point
we have achieved a number of those goals. We have become more
consistent and intense play-to-play as a football team through our
off-season work. What we set out to do in the spring was to get our
younger players better prepared to play during the upcoming fall by
giving them a lot of snaps and repetitions and putting them in a
lot of game-type situations. As a coaching staff we have had a
number of players that have risen to the occasion and are playing
at a higher level than they were at during the fall."
The scoring system for the scrimmage will go as follows: the
defense will be awarded three points for forcing a punt, four
points for forcing a fumble and recovering the ball and five points
for picking off a pass. The offense can score six points when they
score a touchdown, one point for an extra point and three points
for a field goal.
"Being a now veteran football team, one of things that we are
looking for in the spring game is seeing us play more mistake-free
football, Steele stated. "We, as a coaching staff, want to see
improvement and see few turnovers by the offense and limited
penalties from both sides of the ball. That is one reason we keep
the offense and defense separate and going against each other. One
of our majors goals is to go out and continue to progress toward
being a more productive and successful football team and program.
We would like to see improvement in both red zone offense and see
the offense putting points on the board in those situations.
Defensively, we want to see the team play more consistently with as
many three-downs and out and turnovers as they can get. Those are a
few of the areas we want to see improvement on Saturday."
Last season the CU defense was able to outlast the offense by a
score of 42-34 in a similar scoring system. The defense also won
the first spring game by a 33-31 score.
"I think we have made numerous improvements offensively," Steele
said with gleam in his eye. "Obviously fans like to see the offense
score, head coaches don't, but fans do. We feel the progress that
our offense has made throughout last fall and spring is going to
make the game more competitively balanced this year."
Campbell football will start the 2010 home season at Barker-Lane
Stadium/Ed Gore Field against Old Dominion on Sept. 11 starting at
1 p.m. For the first time in three years the Camels first game will
be on the road as the team heads to Virginia Wise to take on
Cavaliers on Sept. 4.
