Lipscomb Defeats Softball 4-1 On First Day Of Atlantic Sun Tournament

DELAND, Fla. - Campbell's softball team (23-30-1) lost its first game in Atlantic Sun Tournament play over the last three seasons in DeLand, Fla. to Lipscomb (45-10) by a 4-1 score on Thursday, May 13 at Patricia Wilson Field. The Camels will now play an elimination game later on this evening.

Lipscomb's Whitney Kiihnl (29-2) was electric for the Lady Bisons and allowed just one run (unearned), four hits and recorded 14 strikeouts. Senior Brittany Stanley (11-11) tasted defeat for the first time in the last three Atlantic Sun Tournaments and allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings of work.

The Lady Bisons wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a run in the first. Lauren Dortweght led off the game with a swinging chopper to second. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on the two-out double from Kellie Sirus down the left field line.

Mollie Mitchell led off the second inning for Lipscomb with a home run. It was her fifth home run of the season and increased the margin to two.

The Camels scored a run in the third inning. Junior Keeli Michael reached on a one-out single and moved all the way to third on a throwing error. After a pop out, junior Katie Hinton pushed a single to left to score Michael with the only Campbell run.

Lipscomb got the run back in the third inning. Kellie Sirus launched her 13th home run of the season to right center to again put Campbell at a two-run deficit.

The Camels had a runner reach second in the fifth as freshman Sarah Forgacs reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a pass ball but Kiihln was able to get a close ground out off the bat of Hinton to get out of the inning unscathed.

LU added a run to the lead in the fifth inning. Mackenzie Tucker started the inning by reaching on a throwing error from the Campbell second baseman. She moved to second on the overthrow as well. Abby Keese then laid down a bunt single that Campbell's third baseman threw away to allow Tucker to score on. After a infield single by Courtney Billington and another Campbell error to move her to second. Billington was thrown out at the plate on a nice throw from junior Lizzie Goldbach to sophomore Taylor McGee after the single from Christen Campbell.

The Camels will now take on the loser of the No. 5 seed Jacksonville and No. 2 seed Stetson in an elimination game at 4 p.m. tonight.
