Bangi named to A-Sun all-conference 2nd-team

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After reaching base in every game he played this year, Chris Bangi of Campbell University has been named to the Atlantic Sun all-conference baseball second team.

The senior outfielder from Jacksonville, Fla., led the A-Sun and ranked 7th nationally in on-base percentage (.548) after reaching via a hit, walk or hit by pitch in each of his 52 games. He ended the regular season ranked 2nd among A-Sun leaders in batting average (.417), 3rd in stolen bases (26), 4th in walks (38) and 1st in hit by pitch (22).

Bangi scored 58 runs, stroked 15 doubles and posted 32 RBI while striking out just 17 times in 187 at-bats.

In addition, the former Edward White High School and Marion Military Institute standout batted .467 with a .573 on-base percentage in 25 games against A-Sun pitching. He also earned a place on the 2010 A-Sun All-Academic Team.

"Chris had an amazing season and it's great that he is receiving some accolades for all the work he put forth this year," said Campbell head coach Greg Goff. "I'm very proud of his accomplishments and what he has done for our program. The season he had offensively will be one to remember for a long time."

Bangi set new school records for career on-base percentage (.543) and times hit by pitch (52). His .379 career batting average stands second only to 1986 2nd-round draft pick John Posey (.401) in Campbell record books, while his 44 career steals (in only 98 games) rank 6th all-time among CU Division I era (since 1978) leaders.

Among Campbell single-season records, Bangi's senior year OBP (.548) stands second only to John Posey's .554 mark in 1985. He holds the top two records for hit by pitch (30 in 2009 and 22 in 2010), and his .538 OBP in 2009 is third on CU's all-time single-year list.

Batting at the top of the order, Bangi reached base an amazing 56.5 percent of the time (48 times in 85 chances) when leading off an inning this year. He produced 12 RBI in 14 chances when a runner was at 3rd base with less than two out.

Bangi's 26 steals this year tie for the 4th-most in CU Division I history, while his .417 batting average is the 5th-highest ever recorded by a Camel.

He smacked a career-high 5 hits (in 5 at-bats) at North Florida on Mar. 27 and swiped a career-best 3 bases vs. Kennesaw State one week earlier. The right-handed batter produced a career-high 4 RBI on Mar. 23 in a 15-10 victory over North Carolina State.

Bangi hit safely in 40 of 52 outings and produced 25 multi-hit games, while scoring more than one run 15 times. He also notched a 13-game hitting streak, longest among CU players this year.

His table-setting and run-producing skills helped Campbell rank among the nation's top 10 schools in 7 offensive categories, including doubles, hit by pitch, hits, batting average and stolen bases. In addition, the Camels ranked among the nation's top-20 in runs and runs per game. The Camels finished the year 28-27 overall and recorded back-to-back winning seasons (27-24 in 2009) for the first time since 2001.

As a junior in 2009, Bangi led the nation in times hit by a pitch (30) and batted .329 with a .538 OBP, scored 66 runs (3rd-most in CU history) in 46 games and stole 18 bases.

Regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast placed six players on the all-conference first and second teams, led by unanimous A-Sun pitcher of the year Chris Sale, who led the league in wins (10-0), ERA (1.97), strikeouts (135) and opposing batting average (.217). FGCU's Dave Tollett was named A-Sun coach of the year after guiding the Eagles to a 25-5 league mark and 37-18 overall record.

East Tennessee State first baseman Paul Hoilman was tabbed A-Sun player of the year after leading the conference in batting average (.428), runs (76), home runs (24), total bases (194) and slugging (.874), while rating 3rd in RBI (77) and doubles (23). Outfielder Dan Gulbransen of Jacksonville was selected A-Sun freshman of the year.
