BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Matt Moot of Campbell University, birdied the
18th hole to edge his college teammates Zak Drescher and Vaita
Guillaume by one stroke to win the 16th-annual Keith Hills Amateur
Championship on May 16.
A native of Johnstown, Pa., who completed his junior season on the
Fighting Camel golf team last month, Moot shot 66-71-137 on the
par-72, 6625-yard Keith Hills layout to win the 97-player event.
Drescher, from Landisville, Pa., shot 72-67-139, while Guillaume
shot 70-69-139.
Paul Howell (69-74-143) and Harrison Ashworth (76-70-146), both of
whom just completed their freshman year with the Fighting Camels,
finished tied for 12th and 25th, respectively.
Just over a week later, Moot, of Windber Country Club, and
Drescher, of Lancaster Country Club, cruised to a record breaking
Pennsylvania Better-Ball Championship victory on May 25 at Bedford,
Pa., posting rounds of 62 and 64, to break the event record by four
strokes.
The pair carded 3 birdies and an eagle over their opening nine
holes. They finished their day 10-under-par (5-under-par over the
last 4 holes). Moot aced the par-3, 170-yard 17th hole, with a
6-iron. Moot and Drescher won the event, which included 62 teams,
by six strokes
The low numbers came in spite of an extremely wet, difficult
course. The rough measured in the "US Open-esque" category for both
days of competition due to one and a half inches of rain the day
before competition. The Bedford Springs Resort's Old Course
features five par 5's, which measure anywhere from 519 yards to 617
yards.
Moot ended his junior campaign at Campbell by earning
all-tournament honors at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship,
Apr. 19-21, where he tied for fourth place at one-under-par 215
(75-71-69). In 10 events during the 2009-10 season, Moot produced
four top-10 finishes and a 73.5 stroke average.
Drescher completed his junior season at CU with a 75.0 stroke
average, plus a pair of top-10s that included a victory at the
Philadelphia Big Five Invitational last fall. Guillaume led CU
with a 72.9 stroke average in 2009-10, plus 5 top-10 showings.
