BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Adoniss Jones, Campbell
track & field's first national semifinalist since 2007, will
continue his all-American bid Thursday, when he lines up in the
men's 110 meter hurdles at the NCAA Track & Field National
Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Jones will compete for all-American status and a spot in the
national finals at 5:35 p.m. on Thursday at historic Hayward Field.
With a top-eight finish, Jones could earn all-American honors.
The junior from Trinidad & Tobago reached Eugene after notching
a school record 110 meter hurdle time of 13.88, breaking his own
mark of 14.00, set while winning the Atlantic Sun Outdoor
Championship for the third straight time in the event.
After watching the evening's first two 110 meter hurdle heats at
the North Carolina A&T Irwin Belk Track, Jones notched a time
of 13.88, finishing sixth in his individual section, but qualifying
Jones 12th overall, edging Virginia's Adams Abdulrazaaq
and his mark of 13.91.
The third heat proved to be the fastest of the night, with six of
the eight competitors advancing to Nationals. Jones finished just
ahead of East Tennessee State's Michael James, who took seventh in
the individual heat with a mark of 14.11. James finished
20th overall.
The top three finishers in each heat claimed the initial nine
places in Eugene, with the next best three overall times punching
their tickets as well.
Johnny Dutch of South Carolina finished with the 110 meter hurdles
regional crown, recording a blistering time of 13.53. Army's
Domonick Sylve took Jones' heat with a time of 13.67. The pair will
be seeded third and 10th, respectively among the event's
24 qualifiers. Jones is ranked 24th in the field.
Oklahoma junior Ronnie Ash leads the group with a time of
13.37.
The 2010 NCAA Division I Track & Field Outdoor Championships
will begin on Wednesday, June 9 at 1 p.m. with the 100 meter
hurdles portion of the women's heptathlon. Competition on Thursday
and Friday will get underway at 10 a.m. each day, while the final
day of the national championships, Saturday June 12, will start
with women's javelin at 9:25 a.m. The men's 4x400 meter relay will
wrap competition at 11:50 a.m. on Saturday.
