BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After earning their first berth in the Atlantic
Sun conference tournament since 2005 last season, the Campbell
women's soccer team faces a schedule filled with many familiar and
future foes in 2010. In addition to the ten-game A-Sun slate, the
Camels square off with four Big South Conference foes-Campbell will
rejoin the conference in the summer of 2011.
"As with every year we are very much looking forward to the coming
season," said fifth-year head coach Todd Clark. "With this
schedule we were seeking to accomplish three things: compete
against some of the teams in the region we feel we typically
recruit against, compete against some of the schools we will face
after joining in the Big South Conference in 2011, and compete in
such a manner that we can return to the Atlantic Sun Conference
championship weekend with an eye towards winning the title in our
last year."
The 2009 CU squad enjoyed their most successful season under Clark,
posting a 9-9-2 mark overall with a 4-4-2 ledger in league play.
Junior Marisa Muller was named an A-Sun all-conference second
teamer in 2009 and sophomore Jeannie Borda was selected to the
league all-freshman team.
Campbell brings a very experienced roster featuring ten returning
starters and four seniors into the 2010 campaign. A strong
nine-member recruiting class joins the returnees, ensuring that
depth will not be a problem for the Camels.
"We have the largest, most experienced and talented team that
Campbell has produced since we last won the A-Sun title over
Central Florida in 2004," said Clark. "We are pleased with the
spring we had, ecstatic about our recruiting, and looking forward
to an eventful 2010."
Campbell begins its 2010 schedule in Florence, S.C., with an
exhibition match against Francis Marion Friday, Aug. 13.
CU returns to the Creek for its regular season and home opener
versus Western Carolina on Friday, Aug. 20. The teams will square
off for the first time since 2005 when the Catamounts dealt the
Camels a 3-0 loss in Cullowhee.
The Camels then travel for a pair of away matches against the Big
South's High Point University Aug. 23 and Elon University Aug. 27.
Campbell dealt the Paladins of High Point a 1-0 defeat at the Eakes
Complex in 2009. High Point went on to earn a berth in the NCAA
Women's College Cup, where they lost 1-0 to fourth-ranked North
Carolina.
Southern Conference member Elon defeated Campbell in a 2-1 overtime
affair in their last meeting in 2007.
Campbell returns to Buies Creek to host matches versus the
University of Maryland-Baltimore County (Aug. 30) and Coastal
Carolina (Sept. 1). CU will meet UMBC for the third time in school
history, as the teams haven't played since a 2-1 Camel victory in
1993.
Coach Clark's side then hits the road for a season-long three-game
road swing. CU will take on South Carolina State Sept. 6, a year
after a 2-0 Camel conquest over the Bulldogs.
Radford (Sept. 9) and VMI (Sept. 11) host CU after Campbell claimed
one-goal triumphs and Olga Ekblom scored a pair of game-winners
over the Big South members in 2009.
Campbell's 4-4-2 mark in A-Sun play last year was their best under
Clark. The Camels kick off their ten-game conference slate when
they host USC Upstate Thursday, Sept. 16.
CU next travels to Johnson City, Tenn., to face East Tennessee
State University Sept. 18. Annabelle Gibney's 98th
minute golden goal lifted CU to a 1-0 victory over ETSU in Buies
Creek last season.
CU returns to Buies Creek for a Thursday/Saturday home stand
against Stetson (Sept. 23) and Florida Gulf Coast (Sept. 25).
After defeating CU 2-1 in the A-Sun tournament in 2009, the Hatters
lead the all-time series 7-6-4.
Campbell takes on FGCU in the second half of the home stand on
Parents' Day. Muller scored the game's lone goal in last year's
meeting at Florida Gulf Coast against a team went on to finish
6-2-2 in A-Sun play.
The Camels will head to the Music City for a Sep. 30 tussle with
Belmont and remain in Nashville for an Oct. 2 tilt with
Lipscomb.
Muller's game-winner off a free kick sent CU to a 3-2 triumph over
Lipscomb in 2009. Campbell is undefeated in seven matches against
the Bisons (6-0-1).
Campbell next squares off against Kennesaw State (Oct. 7) and
Mercer (0ct. 9) in their final A-Sun home matches of the season.
KSU went on to win the A-Sun tournament championship and represent
the conference in the 2009 Women's College Cup, where they lost 2-0
to tenth-ranked Wake Forest.
CU makes their final road trip of the year as they head to
Jacksonville, Fla. to close out league play against Jacksonville
(Oct. 14) and North Florida (Oct. 16). The Camels notched a pair
of draws with the Sunshine State foes last season in Buies
Creek.
"We still have some challenges in that we are the Atlantic Sun
Conference program that always plays back to back and we travel
more than anyone with the exception of FGCU but those are not good
enough excuses for this particular team," said Clark.
Campbell closes out its 2010 campaign with a non-conference match
when they host Longwood University Oct. 22.
The six-team 2010 Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Championship begins
with first-round play Oct. 30. The top two schools in the
standings receive first-round byes into the semifinal round, which
commences Thursday, Nov. 4. The third seed will host the sixth
seed and four seed will host the fifth-seeded team at on-campus
sites to determine the third and fourth semifinalists. The
tournament final is set for Saturday, Nov. 6.
