BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell University has added a seventh member
to its 2010 men's basketball recruiting class in Andrew Ryan. The
6-foot-4, 190-pound guard from Lynden, Wash., has signed an
athletics grant-in-aid, head coach Robbie Laing announced.
As a senior at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Ga.) School, Ryan earned
first-team all-conference honors in the Carolinas Athletic
Association and led the program to an 18-11 record, plus a state
playoff berth for the first time in 37 years.
He averaged 17.9 points and 4.0 assists per game and scored a
season-high 35 at Carolina Day.
"We're really pleased to have Andrew Ryan join our program because
he's such a prolific shooter," said Coach Laing, who is entering
his eighth year at Campbell. "Outside shooting was an element I
thought we were missing last year. Andrew's a dribble-pass-shoot
guy. Not only is he efficient behind the arc, but he gets to the
hole, can finish strong and sets up other people off penetration as
well."
A two-sport standout, Ryan also earned all-conference honors in
baseball. He batted .526 with 20 doubles, two home runs, 41 RBI
and 11 stolen bases during the 2010 campaign. Ryan spent his first
two years at Lynden (Wash.) Christian before transferring to Rabun
Gap-Nacoochee in the fall of 2008.
"There are a lot of coaches out there who feel like we've uncovered
a hidden gem this late in the recruiting process. We feel like we
got a high quality player by just turning over stones throughout
the summer," said Laing. "Andrew has great character, and will be
a big factor in the foundation of this program for a long time to
come."
Campbell's seven-man 2010 recruiting class includes five freshmen
and two junior college transfers. In addition, the Camels have
added walk-on Keishawn Mayes, who earned Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference all-rookie team honors as a freshman at Maryland-Eastern
Shore in 2009. Mayes practiced with the team during the 2009-10
season, but did not play in games according to NCAA transfer
guidelines.
The recruiting class joins a Fighting Camel squad that is coming
off an Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship,
Campbell's first-ever regular season title as a Division I member
(since '77-78). In addition, A-Sun Coach of the Year Robbie
Laing's club set school Division I era records for regular season
wins (19-11) and conference victories (14-6).
Three starters, including A-Sun defensive player of the year Junard
Hartley and 2009 league freshman of the year Lorne Merthie return
from last season's Fighting Camel squad.
