Men's Soccer opens pre-season slate with 3-0 loss at Elon

ELON, N.C. - Campbell opened its men's soccer pre-season schedule Saturday night with a 3-0 setback at Elon.

"I think we're much deeper on the defensive side of the ball," said first-year Camel head coach Steve Armas. "Making two bad passes and giving a penalty kick doesn't necessarily reflect on poor defending all night. We also created some chances, and Khalil Johnson was dangerous out wide, but need to concentrate on our fitness in the week and a half before we open with Loyola."

With the exception of freshman central defender Aleksi Tossavainen, Armas started a veteran 11 in the first 35-minute segment. After a scoreless first period, the Phoenix converted two poor clearances into breakaway goals.

"We started the second period with a young, inexperienced group, but our energy level and tempo was very good," said Armas.

Denzel Ogunyase and Chris Heyn pounced on loose balls behind the CU back four to give the 2009 Southern Conference runner-up a 2-0 advantage. Greg Mader later converted from the penalty spot for the final margin.

Campbell returns to Buies Creek Friday for its final pre-season game in a 6:00 p.m. kick-off against Coastal Carolina.
