BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After blanking High Point 1-0 Monday, the
Campbell women's soccer team will finish the second half its road
trip when they square off with Elon Friday in an 8 p.m. kick-off at
Rudd Field.
Freshman Pirjo
Leppikangas scored her first career goal off a Kaili
Terry free kick and keeper Jamie
Panfil made three saves to record her seventh career shutout
for Campbell (1-1) in Monday's victory over High Point.
"Facing Elon will be a real challenge," said head coach Todd
Clark. "They're very well-coached and have already played a
difficult opponent. The game is part of the school's orientation
activities, so it'll be a hostile environment, and we've got to put
our kids in those situations for us to be successful. It will be a
very difficult game."
Elon (0-1) enters Friday's match after dropping a 2-1 contest with
15th-ranked Virginia Tech last Friday.
The Phoenix return seven starters from a side that finished the
2009 campaign with a 12-5-2 record, its winningest record since
joining the Division I ranks. Third-year head coach Chris Neal
added ten freshmen in his 2010 recruiting class.
Elon was picked to finish fifth in the preseason Southern
Conference coaches' poll released last week. Sophomore defender
Claire O'Keefe was named to the 2010 preseason all-conference
team.
The two teams have met on eight previous occasions, with Elon
owning a 6-2 record against the Camels. Elon won a 2-1 overtime
affair in the teams' last meeting in 2007.
Terry, who scored in the season-opener, leads the Camels with three
points through the first two games. She joins defenders Jeannie
Borda, Taylor
Brown, Ashley
Wagner, and keeper Jamie
Panfil as the only Camels to have played the full 90 minutes in
each of CU's first two games.
