Villanova Tops Camels to Open Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Villanova took all three sets of its 2010 season opener over Campbell, 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 23-25), to kick off the Carolina Classic Friday evening inside Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Villanova opens the season 1-0, while Campbell falls to 0-1 after match number one of the 2010 season.

Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Reaves led the Camels with a 10 kill, 18 dig double-double, adding a block and an assist. Senior outside Emily Werner tallied eight kills with a pair of digs and two blocks. Freshman setter Heather Wilson added 15 assists, six digs, four kills and two aces, while senior Paige Tortorello posted 10 assists and six digs. Senior Allyson Goldbach also registered 10 digs.

Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Morgan Petkovich and junior middle blocker Maggie Mergen combined for 27 kills on the evening, with Petkovich adding seven digs and Mergen posting three aces. Junior setter Courtney Oertli dished out 25 assists while Kim Maroon, a junior libero, recorded 24 digs.

The Camels jumped out to a 6-1 advantage to open the game before forcing Villanova into a timeout. After a Heather Wilson ace, the Camels owned an 8-2 lead. The Wildcats, however, battled back to knot the contest at 11-all, and posted a 10-3 run to take the lead for the first time at 12-11. The Wildcats went on to win the frame, 25-16.

Kelsey Campbell totaled six digs in the opening set, while Caitlin Bendy registered a pair of blocks and a kill. Maggie Mergen posted four kills for the Wildcats.

After trading blows in the opening points of the second frame, two straight Emily Werner kills put the Camels our in front, 7-5. Trailing 18-13 in the frame following a timeout, kills from Jordan Reaves and Allyson Goldbach along with three Villanova errors knotted the contest at 18-all. The Wildcats, however, a 7-3 Villanova run gave the Camels the set loss, 25-21.

Reaves tallied five kills in the set for the Camels, while Wilson posted eight assists and Lauren Garza gathered six digs. Morgan Petrovich led the Wildcats with seven kills, with Courtney Oertli notched 14 assists.

Trailing 20-16, the Camels mounted a 5-1 run on the strength of three Emily Werner kills, knotting the frame at 21-all. With Villanova on top 24-23, a Wildcat attack found the floor, handing Campbell the loss, 24-23.

Reaves tallied 10 digs in the set for the Camels while Werner blasted five kills. Mergen and Petkovich led the Wildcats with a combined 11 kills in the frame.

The Camels will continue play in the Carolina Classic tomorrow with a pair of matches. Campbell will take on the host Tar Heels at 1 p.m., followed by a contest with No. 1 Penn State at 5:30 p.m.

The match between Campbell and Villanova was the first inside Carmichael Arena since Nov. 10, 2007...the first Campbell point of the season came on their opening play, as Villanova's Kim Maroon committed a service error...Jordan Reaves tallied the first CU kill of the season...the Camels fall to 0-6 all-time vs. Big East competition...this was the first-ever meeting between Campbell and Villanova...
