BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Coming off an appearance in the Carolina Classic
to open the 2010 volleyball season, Campbell will travel to the
other end of Tobacco Road on Tuesday, facing Duke at 7 p.m. inside
Cameron Indoor Stadium. Admission to the match is free.
The match will be the home opener for the Blue Devils (1-1), who
earned a split in the Coors Rocky Mountain Challenge. Duke, who is
currently receiving top-25 votes, took a 3-1 (25-16, 26-24, 24-26,
25-21) loss to No. 17 Colorado State before edging Colorado 3-2
(25-18, 26-28, 18-25, 25-16, 15-10) in comeback fashion.
Senior middle blocker Becci Burling led the way for Duke with 3.33
kills and 1.00 blocks per set. Burling tied a career high with 18
kills against the Buffaloes, adding a .314 hitting rate and three
blocks. Junior setter Kellie Catanach notched 10.78 assists per set
and freshman libero Ali McCurdy recorded 3.22 digs a frame over the
weekend.
The Camels (0-3) dropped all three of their Carolina Classic
contests inside historic Carmichael Arena, squaring off with No. 1
Penn State and Villanova in addition to the host Tar Heels.
Sophomore outside hitter Jordan
Reaves led Campbell, averaging 2.56 kills and 2.89 digs per set
on her way to all-tournament honors. Against Villanova in the
Camels' season opener, Reaves notched a career-high 10 kills with
18 digs.
Senior outside hitter and Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference
team member Emily
Werner added 2.00 kills per frame over the tourney, while
junior libero Kelsey
Campbell tacked on 4.12 digs per set.
Werner moved past Tabitha Turner (2003-06) for ninth on the
Campbell all-time attacks list over the weekend. The senior from
Sarasota, Fla. came into the season with 2871 career attempts, just
shy of Turner's 2893. Now with 2946, Werner needs only 11 swings to
tie Rachel Templin (2003-06) for eighth on the list.
Fellow senior, middle blocker Caitlin
Bendy, can also move up on the CU all-time blocking charts.
Bendy needs four block assists to tie Tinsley Gordon (1997-2000) at
235 and six to knot current Campbell assistant coach Ashley
Weers (2006-09) at 237 for fifth on the all-time list.
Campbell is 0-4 all-time against the Blue Devils, with its last
meeting coming in 2004 inside Carter Gym in Buies Creek. Tuesday
will mark the third meeting between the programs in Durham. The
Camels are 3-26 all-time against ACC competition, with all three
wins coming against NC State, including last season's 3-0 win at
the NC State / Hilton RTP Classic.
After the midweek contest, the Camels will travel to Williamsburg,
Va. on Sept. 3-4 for the Tribe Invitational. Campbell will take on
William & Mary, American and Hampton in the tourney.
