BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Following his first multi-goal match of the
season, Khalil Johnson of Campbell University has been named
Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer player of the week.
The senior forward from Kingston, Jamaica scored twice in
Campbell's 2-1 victory over Charlotte Saturday night at the Eakes
Athletic Complex. Johnson's strikes in the 60th and 75th minutes
helped lift CU over a 49ers squad that was tied for second in last
week's Mid-Atlantic Region poll and was coming off a 2-0 victory
over No. 11 Wake Forest.
"We are honored that Khalil has earned this recognition," said
first-year head coach Steve Armas, who collected his first victory
on the Camel sideline. "I feel that Khalil, at any moment, can be
one of the most dangerous players on the field. Charlotte did not
give him much room to work with, but he made the most out of two
key opportunities."
Johnson's double lifted him into a tie for seventh place among
A-Sun goal scoring leaders (2). The performance marked his third
career multi-goal outing and first since he tallied a hat trick on
Oct. 8, 2009 vs. USC Upstate. Charlotte was the third team CU has
faced so far this season that appeared in the 2009 NCAA College
Cup.
Campbell (1-2-2) continues its challenging non-conference slate
Wednesday in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at UNC Greensboro (4-2-0). The
Spartans have won three straight and are ranked eighth in this
week's South Region poll, marking the sixth-consecutive opponent
that brings a regional rating into its match with CU.
Campbell and UNCG are long-time rivals. The teams squared off in
both the 1992 (Campbell 5-0) and 1993 (UNCG 2-1) Big South finals
before CU left the league for the Atlantic Sun Conference and UNCG
joined the Southern Conference. UNCG holds a 14-4-1 edge in the
all-time series against Campbell and has won the last 10 contests,
including a 2-0 decision last year in Buies Creek. Campbell's last
win against the Spartans was by a 4-2 score in 1994 at Buies
Creek.
UNCG opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Charlotte before
falling at Creighton (4-0) and at A-Sun foe Jacksonville (2-1).
The Spartans rebounded with wins over Richmond (2-0), William &
Mary (2-1) and on Saturday over Navy (1-0).
Both Hakan Ilhan and Eli Garner have scored twice this season for
UNCG, while Aaron Reifschneider leads the club with three
assists.
The Spartans are the second of four SoCon members on the CU
schedule this year. CU dropped a 1-0 decision Sept. 7 at Davidson
and hosts Appalachian State on Saturday (7:00) before traveling to
Furman Oct. 5.
