Werner combined for 26 points, leading Campbell past North
Carolina Central, 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-23) in nonconference
volleyball action Tuesday night inside the John W. Pope Jr.
Convocation Center.
Campbell improves to 5-11 with the win, while NCCU falls to 2-13 on
the season.
Bendy, a senior middle blocker, tallied eight blocks, including
seven in the second frame, adding eight kills on 10 errorless
swings (.800). The Stony Brook,, N.Y. native also posted an ace and
a dig in the win. Werner, a senior outside hitter, registered 11
kills with 14 digs for a double-double effort, chipping in two
blocks and an ace.
Another senior, outside hitter Allyson
Goldbach, gathered seven kills with seven digs. Junior middle
blocker Annie
Kobeski tacked on a season-high seven blocks, also grabbing
four digs and three kills. Junior Kelsey
Campbell, meanwhile, collected 11 digs with a pair of aces.
Leading the Eagles was senior outside hitter Belinda Behncke-Biney
with a game-high 15 kills and six digs. Alexia John and Maritsann
Sinclair added seven and four kills, respectively. John also
notched nine digs, while Sinclair added six. Freshman setter
Jzima-Malaki Kalao chipped in 27 assists for NCCU in the loss.
Down 13-9 in the opening set, the Camels climbed back with a 6-1
run, taking the lead on a NCCU attack error. Knotted again at
23-all, NC Central claimed the lead back with am Emanuelle Santos
kill. A Werner kill, followed by a pair of Eagle errors sealed the
come from behind win for the Camels, 26-24.
Campbell controlled the second frame, holding the Eagles to a -.206
attack percentage with 7.0 blocks. Bendy connected on seven block
assists in the set, all while going 4-for-4 on the attack to lead
the Camels to a 25-11 win.
NC Central gained the early lead in the third set, going up 7-2 on
a Behncke-Biney score. Sparked by a NCCU error, the Camels rallied
for another 14-9 run, tying the set at 16-all on one of NC
Central's seven attack errors in the frame. Behncke-Biney didn't
surrender the Eagle lead, however, knocking down one of her six
kills in the set. Still down at 23-21, Kelsey
Campbell served the Camels to the win, wrapping an ace and a
Werner kill around a NCCU error to take the 25-23 win.
The Camels will open up Atlantic Sun play next week, traveling to
Spartanburg, S.C. on Wednesday, Sept. 29 for a slate with USC
Upstate.
