S.C.-The senior trio of Emily
Werner, Allyson
Goldbach and Caitlin
Bendy paced Campbell to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-12, 18-25, 25-15) win
over USC Upstate in the Camels' Atlantic Sun opener Wednesday night
on the campus of Converse College.
The Camels move to 6-11 with their fourth win in five matches, and
begin A-Sun play 1-0. USC Upstate, meanwhile, falls to 6-10 overall
and an even 1-1 in conference action.
Werner, an outside hitter from Sarasota, Fla., tagged a season-high
17 kills and gathered 11 digs with two blocks. Goldbach blasted 15
scores, tying a career-best 18 digs with a block and an ace. Bendy,
a third Camel with double digit points, collected eight kills on 16
attempts with only two errors, hitting .375. The Stony Brook, N.Y.
native added three blocks and five digs in the win.
Junior middle Annie
Kobeski smashed six kills on 13 errorless swings for a stellar
.492 rate, adding four digs and three blocks. Kelsey
Campbell and Lauren
Garza combined for 25 digs, while Heather
Wilson and Hope
Leatigaga recorded 34 assists together.
Freshman outside hitter Cori Harris led the Spartans with 14 kills
and nine digs, while senior middle Katie Downey and junior middle
Morgan Thomas each registered seven kills. Senior libero Megan
Healey posted 15 digs, while sophomore setter Emily Sanders
collected 33 assists and eight digs.
After taking the opening frame 25-21, Campbell exploded for 18
kills on 32 attempts with only one misfire in the second set,
hitting .531 on the way to a 25-12 win. Werner posted seven kills
on 14 attempts without an error in the set, while Bendy collected
four scores.
The Spartans claimed set three, 25-18, outhitting Campbell .171
(12-6-35) to .028 (9-8-36). Campbell claimed the contest in the
fourth stanza with a 25-15 victory. Werner and Kobeski teamed up
for five kills apiece in the frame, leading CU to a .310 (16-3-42)
rate, while holding the Spartans to a .051 (9-7-39) clip.
The Camels will be back in action at home on Friday at 7 p.m.,
welcoming East Tennessee State to Buies Creek for "Dig Pink"
night.
