American Edges Volleyball, 3-2

WILLIAMSBURG, VA.-American came back from a 2-1 set deficit to claim a 3-2 (12-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-25, 6-15) win over Campbell at the Colonial Challenge inside Kaplan Arena Saturday morning.

AU moves to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the tournament, while the Camels fall to 0-6.

Junior middle blocker Annie Kobeski led the Camels in the match, filling the stat sheet with a season-high 11 kills, eight digs and five blocks. The junior from Palm Beach, Fla. also posted five blocks against Duke earlier in the week.

Emily Werner, a senior outside hitter, tallied her 21st career double-double and the first of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs while getting in on three block assists. Freshman middle Lindset Coats added nine kills and three blocks in her first career start, while senior setter Paige Tortorello tallied a season-best 25 assists to go along with six digs. Freshman setter Heather Wilson added 18 assists, four digs, blocks and kills.

Magdalena Tekiel registered 20 kills, 12 digs and six blocks, totaling 23.0 points for American.

The Eagles snagged the opening set, 25-12, hitting .333 (12-4-24), compared to Campbell's -.038 (7-8-26). Magdalena Tekiel and Angelina Waterman led AU with four kills apiece. Jordan Reaves and Allyson Goldbach both posted a pair of kills for the Camels.

After trailing 16-11 in the second, the Camels responded with six straight points, taking the lead on a Heather Wilson ace, 17-16. The CU run continued, extending the lead to three on a Lindsey Coats kill at 23-20, capping the 12-4 Camel spurt. Annie Kobeski fueled Campbell in the set with six kills and a block.

Tied at 14 in set number three, Campbell outscored the Eagles with an 11-5 clip the rest of the way, taking a 25-19 win. The Camels hit .261 (16-4-46) in the frame, holding American to a .178 (14-6-45) rate.

Leading by as many as 10 in the fourth frame, American evened the match at 2-all with a 25-15 win. The Eagles claimed a .342 (17-4-38) attack percentage in the set, while the Camels posted eight kills on 34 swings. Tekiel paced the Eagles with seven kills on 13 attempts without an error.

American completed the comeback with a 15-6 victory in the fifth and deciding set, hitting .667 with 11 kills on 15 attempts, recording only one misfire in the frame.

The Camels will round out Colonial Challenge play with Hampton at 4 p.m. Campbell will make its home debut on Tuesday, Sept. 7 inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
