BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell jumped out to a 21-4 lead and never
trailed in a 68-46 Atlantic Sun win over Mercer Monday afternoon
inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
The Lady Camels move to 5-10 overall with a 4-2 A-Sun mark with
their fourth consecutive win, while Mercer falls to 1-13 on the
season and 1-4 in league games. The victory was also Campbell's
fifth-straight at home.
Senior forward Lauren
Yesh fueled the Lady Camels with a career-high 19 points,
adding 10 rebounds the Evart, Mich. native's second double-double
of the season, and fourth in her career. Yesh totaled an 8-for-11
clip from the floor, including 2-of-3 from long distance. The
senior also added two steals and an assist in the win.
Junior guard Kate
Cloxton also reached double figures with 12 points behind four
threes, adding five assists and three rebounds. Senior guard Courtney
Cannon posted eight points and five rebounds, while sophomore
forward Jazmine
Cooper registered seven points and seven rebounds with
career-highs of four steals and three assists.
Sophomore guard Monique
Spry also poured in six points, four rebounds and three
assists, while Tonisha
Baker and Roslyn
Presley tacked on five points apiece. Baker, a sophomore guard,
also collected four boards and four assists.
The Lady Camels attempted a school record 31 three-pointers in the
game, passing the previous mark of 29, reached twice in the
program's history (vs. Liberty, 12/5/98; vs. UNC Wilmington,
12/21/95).
Leading the Bears was freshman forward Brittnee Hazel with 19
points and 10 boards, adding four steals. Freshman guard Rebecca
Clanton added 11 points off the bench for Mercer, while Briana
Williams, another rookie guard, added six points. Sharnea Boykin, a
freshman guard, posted 10 assists with three points and three
rebounds in the loss.
The Lady Camels opened the game on a 21-4 run, nailing three
baskets from three-point range, matching the team's total from
their previous game. Cloxton led the way in the hot start, draining
a pair from distance.
Campbell extended its lead to 20 for the first time in the contest
at the 4:23 mark when Katelyn
Bass found Cooper on the backdoor cut for a lay-in, putting CU
on top 34-14. The Lady Camels reached their largest advantage of
the half with 15 seconds remaining in the frame, as Cannon took a
Spry pass on the break and connected, pushing the CU lead to
43-21.
Campbell led 43-24 at the half.
Following a Mercer turnover, Yesh opened the half for CU with one
of her two three-pointers, and Cloxton extended the lead to 23,
51-28, at the 16:45 mark on another three, one of her four on the
afternoon.
Despite shooting 20.6 percent from the floor in the second half,
the Lady Camels owned a 25-22 second stanza advantage, forcing the
Bears to shoot just 23.1 percent.
Leading by as many as 27, Campbell's largest lead of the season,
the Lady Camels defeated the Bears, 68-46.
Closing the 4-0 home stand, Campbell now travels to Nashville,
Tenn. to take on A-Sun foes Belmont and Lipscomb, Saturday, Jan. 15
and Monday, Jan. 17.
