ASHLAND, Ohio - The Campbell wrestling team dropped a trio of
matches Saturday against Ashland, Eastern Michigan, and No. 17 Kent
State in the Wendy's Duals in Ashland, Ohio.
Campbell dropped to 1-11 in dual competition this year with the
three losses.
"Today was a pretty
tough day for us," said first-year head coach Joe Boardwine, who
was coaching against his alma mater. "There were some bright spots
with Ryan and John's wins, but today showed our guys how far we
still have to go to become a great program. We came here to
wrestle against some tough opponents, and we gained some experience
today."
The Camels took on Ashland in their first dual of the day, and
Ashland won eight matches to best Campbell 38-9. CU senior Ryan
Ham defeated Jake Piatt 5-2 in the 165 pound weight class, and at
184 pounds, sophomore John Merickel picked up his first pin of the
season, topping Justin Cheesman in 6:31.
Eastern Michigan defeated Campbell 53-0 in the second match of the
day. No. 17 Kent State won over Campbell 56- -1; a team point was
deducted after the 174-pound match.
Campbell returns to action for a single dual next Friday at The
Citadel. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
