BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell shot over 62 percent as a unit and
notched six in double figures to sink Stetson 93-80 and grab win
number seven in a row Saturday in Atlantic Sun action.
The Lady Camels move to 8-10 on the season and 7-2 in A-Sun play,
while Stetson falls to 9-10 with a 5-5 league record. The win is
the fourth in a row over the Hatters, and the sixth time in the
series' last seven meetings that the Lady Camels have come out on
top.
With 93 tallies, the Lady Camels scored their most points since
Feb. 13, 2003, a 107-90 win over Florida Atlantic in Buies Creek.
CU last scored 90 points in a game at Charleston Southern, downing
the Buccaneers 90-81 on Nov. 24, 2008.
The Lady Camels set season-highs in points (93), field goals made
(38), field goal percentage (.623, 38-61), free throw percentage
(.900, 9-10), assists (26) and fewest turnovers (14).
Sophomore guard Tonisha
Baker paced six Lady Camels in double figures with 16 points,
adding two rebounds, assists and steals. Sophomore forward Jazmine
Cooper added 14 points and six rebounds, while senior forward
Lauren
Yesh tallied 14 points and four boards. Sophomore guard Monique
Spry added another 14 points, hitting 4-of-5 three pointers, a
career-high.
Kate
Cloxton, a junior guard racked up her first career
double-double with 13 points and a personal-best 12 assists.
Cloxton hit 5-of-6 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from distance.
Cloxton is the first Lady Camel to reach 12 assists since Letitia
Dickson in 2007, and came just three assists short of the school
record, 15, set by Lady Camel head coach Wanda
Watkins (played from 1975-79), Janice Washington (1996-01) and
Julie Skinner (1984-88). Cloxton's 12 dimes are also a Gore Arena
record.
A Winfield, W.Va. native, Cloxton hit career threes 100, 101 and
102 in the game, passing Kristin Vuckovich (99, 2001-05) and Amber
Graham (101, 2002-06) to move into sixth place on the all-time
list.
Stetson was led by sophomore guard Victoria McGowan with 19 points
and 10 rebounds, adding four assists and two steals in the loss.
Senior guard Tierra Brown added 16 points with a trio of buckets
from long range, while Natasha Graboski and Jessica Conner recorded
13 points apiece.
Graboski added six boards, with Conner pulling down four. Sophomore
forward Simone Taylor posted a 4-for-5 clip from the floor for 10
points. Freshman forward Sasha Sims tacked on nine points and six
rebounds for the Hatters.
The teams traded baskets for much of the first half, until after a
Taylor free throw put Stetson up 32-31 at the 2:13 mark, the Lady
Camels rallied for a 7-1 run to close the half. CU owned a 38-33
lead at the break.
The Lady Camels continued that run after the half, pushing their
lead to 48-36 at the 17:03 mark on a Baker bucket, wrapping a 17-4
streak around the intermission.
The Hatters cut the CU lead to eight on six occasions over the next
9:10, but a pair of Cooper free throws followed by a Cannon trey
pushed the Campbell lead to 15 at 76-61 with 6:30 to play.
Stetson cut the lead to single digits one last time with a Conner
lay-up at the 2:24 mark, but Baker answered for Campbell with
another bucket, leading the Lady Camels to a 7-2 run to close the
game, winning 93-80.
The Lady Camels will host Florida Gulf Coast on Monday in Buies
Creek. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Pope Center.
