Campbell past Jacksonville 77-65 in the Lady Camels' Atlantic Sun
home opener Monday night inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation
Center.
Campbell improves to 2-10 on the season with its second-straight
home victory, and move to 1-2 in A-Sun play. JU falls to 6-6
overall and 1-2 in league action. The win was CU head coach Wanda
Watkins' 449 of her career.
Spry, a sophomore guard, posted a 2-for-4 clip from three and hit
5-of-6 free throw attempts to collect her best career total,
surpassing her previous high of 17, set earlier this season at
Wofford. Baker, another sophomore guard, posted a 6-of-9 rate from
the floor for her 17 tallies. Baker's 13 rebounds mark a
career-best.
Senior forward Lauren
Yesh added another double-double effort with 10 points and 11
rebounds, a season-high on the glass. The Evart, Mich. native added
two steals and two blocks in the win. Senior guard Courtney
Cannon tacked on nine points and five rebounds, while sophomore
forward Jazmine
Cooper recorded six points and nine rebounds.
Leading the Dolphins was senior center Lynsey Paschal with 15
points, nine rebounds and three steals. Junior guard Ashanti
Williams posted 14 points, going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Maggie Wilson, a sophomore guard, also drained a trio of threes,
finishing with 13 points and four rebounds. Senior forward Taneskei
Richardson gathered 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Dolphins,
including seven of each in the first half.
The Lady Camels opened the game with a 7-0 spurt, with Cooper
having a hand in all three CU baskets, sinking a lay-in before
collected a pair of assists. With 16:02 on the clock, Campbell
extended its lead to eight on a Baker lay-up from Kate
Cloxton, 11-3.
After the Dolphins took their first lead of the contest with a 16-6
run, CU posted another streak, this time 12-5, to grab a 31-24
lead. Spry, who tallied eight points over that run, added another
four over the remainder of the half, helping CU lead by as many as
15 before the break.
An 8-2 Campbell run out of the half inflated the Lady Camel lead to
20, 55-35, at the 17:53 mark. That lead swelled to 22 with 12:40 to
play on a Cannon free throw.
Still leading 66-44 at the 11:59 mark, the Dolphins rallied,
scoring 18 of the game's next 22 points as Campbell went without a
field goal for 8:43. Roslyn
Presley finally broke the CU drought with a lay-up with 3:16 to
play.
Clinging to a 70-62 advantage, the Lady Camels pushed a 7-3
advantage over the contests final minutes, claiming the 77-65
win.
Campbell will be back in action on Wednesday inside the Pope
Center, taking on North Florida at 5:15 p.m. The game will be the
second of four in eight days for the Lady Camels.
