CREEK, N.C. - Coming off two disappointing losses, Campbell seeks
to return to its winning ways on Friday when the Camels host
Kennesaw State in the first A-Sun/CSS-TV Game of the Week of the
2011 campaign.
The Camels (7-6, 1-3) took a 5-game winning streak into a short
Christmas break, but have not won since, falling 72-59 at ETSU
(Dec. 30), then dropping a pair of two-point decisions at home this
week to Jacksonville (67-65) and North Florida (57-55).
CU's 3-game losing streak is its longest since Jan. 27-Feb. 1 of
2010, but last year's club answered that slide with 6-straight
victories. CU is 4-2 at home this year, 26-9 all-time at Gore
Arena, while Kennesaw State is 0-8 on the road this season.
Each of CU's last 3 home games has been decided in the final
possession.
On Dec. 22, Junard Hartley hit a 3-pointer with
1.4 seconds left in a 57-56 win over UNC Wilmington. On Monday,
Glenn Powell's lay-up with 1.0 seconds to go provided Jacksonville
with a 67-65 victory.
On Wednesday, Amir Celestin's floater at the
buzzer bounced off the rim in the 57-55 loss to North Florida.
After missing 4 games with a fractured cheekbone, senior forward
Preston Dodson returned to the lineup Monday and
is averaging 8.5 points over the last two contests.
With 64 blocked shots through 13 games, Campbell leads the A-Sun in
rejections (4.9 per outing) and has already matched last year's
total (64 in 30 games). The school team record for blocks in a
year is 117, set over the course of 27 games in the 1997-98
campaign. Eric Griffin (2.27) and
Marvelle Harris (1.85) rank 2nd and 3rd,
respectively, among A-Sun blocks leaders.
Campbell continues to lead the A-Sun in field goal percentage
(.483) and 3-point accuracy (.393) after hitting 55% (22-40) of its
shots, 4-5 from 3-point range, vs. UNF.
Since opening the year 2-0, including an 80-63 victory over Georgia
Tech, Kennesaw State has lost 11 of its last 12 games, including a
10-game slide. KSU defeated USC Upstate 78-71, but dropped an
80-69 decision Wednesday to ETSU.
Campbell has won seven of the last eight games in the series vs.
KSU, including 5-straight. Seven of the nine games between the
schools have been decided by 10, or fewer, points.
Campbell senior guard Junard Hartley and Kennesaw
State senior guard Kelvin McConnell were high
school teammates at Whitefield Academy in Atlanta.
KSU's Markeith Cummings (16.0) and Spencer Dixon (15.8), who stand
3rd and 4th among A-Sun scoring leaders, are the 2nd-highest
scoring teammates (31.8 ppg) in the league behind Lipscomb's Adnan
Hodzic (20.4) and Josh Slater (17.1).
The Camels defeated Kennesaw State 87-44 Jan. 31, 2009 at Kennesaw,
marking CU's largest-ever win margin vs. a Division I opponent
overall, as well as its biggest-ever victory gap in a road game and
A-Sun game.
Kennesaw's 80-63 win over Georgia Tech on Nov. 15 at the KSU
Convocation Center was the first for the Owls over a BCS conference
school. KSU also set a school home game attendance record
(4,784).
Following Friday's game, Campbell concludes its four-game home
stand on Monday with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against Mercer.
