Q: You came to Buies Creek all the way from Fruit Heights, Utah. What made you decide to play volleyball at Campbell?

Campbell: I'd never heard of Campbell University, but the coaches recruited me, I took a visit and I really liked the school. I also liked the coaches and the program, not to mention, my last name is Campbell (laughs). It was a great chance to play volleyball and get an education.

Q: What's your hometown like?

Campbell: It's a smaller town. It links into another town, Kaysville. Whenever we have a home football game everyone is there and it's packed with everyone in the community. So everyone is really supportive. My high school is very traditional, being one of the oldest in Utah.

Q: You come from a very athletic family. What was it like growing up in a family where pretty much everyone played college sports?

Campbell: Well I also grew up with three brothers so everything was really competitive. Everything from who was the first one to the car to…you name it. I would always go to sleep with SportsCenter, and that's what I still go to sleep with now. My dad is the most intense in my family. He always coached me and my brothers. He coaches basketball, and he coached football for my brothers too. He played volleyball and a bunch of my ants and uncles played volleyball too. We're a basketball family though.

Q: So the pickup games at family reunions are pretty intense?

Campbell: Yeah (laughs). We get after it in sand volleyball games too.

Q: What made you choose volleyball?

Campbell: It was a hard decision. I miss basketball a lot, but I'm glad I chose volleyball because I'm here. I've wondered what would have happened if I picked basketball. I really like the season for volleyball, though.

Q: We probably already know the answer to this question, but if you could play any other sport besides volleyball, what would it be and why?

Campbell: Definitely basketball. I grew up playing basketball. It's the game I know the best besides volleyball and my family is really basketball oriented. I grew up watching the Utah Jazz.

Q: You play the libero position. For those who don't know volleyball, explain what you do for your team and why you get to wear a different color jersey.

Campbell: Libero is the defensive specialist and can only play in the back row. To explain the different color uniform, volleyball has rules that allow you to only play the back row and only sub for one person, but you have unlimited substitutions, so it's a distinguishing factor. To play libero you have to be a leader on the court. You can see the whole court being on the back row the whole time, seeing where everyone is hitting, where the block should go and different things like that.

Q: Your team seems to be playing better and better as the year goes on. What do you think is making you gel on the court?

Campbell: I think we're getting more used to playing together on the court. We're also really good friends off the court, and I think that has led to us playing better on the court. We're starting to realize who's ball is who's when and being able to communicate with those front row hitters…our block has been amazing, getting to where it needs to be. So I think just practicing and playing more and more has been huge. I'm glad we have a preseason (nonconference) so that for conference matches these things do fall into place.

Q: What has been your fondest memory playing at Campbell so far?

Campbell: Probably playing Penn State last year, going against a three-time national champion. We played pretty well, considering, against them. It was a great opportunity to play against some really great players and a great team.

Q: What's it like being the only player on the team with your name on the back of your jersey?

Campbell: the only time I really think about it is when the people in the stands say something like, 'Hey, your name is on the back of your jersey.' It's different, but I don't really think about it. Sometimes when I hear Campbell out in the crowd or something, it triggers because people back home call me 'Campbell,' but usually they're just talking about the team.

Q: You're majoring in exercise and sport science here at Campbell. What is or has been your favorite class?

Campbell: My favorite has been exercise and sport physiology. I just think it's really interesting to see how everything works.

Q: What are your aspirations after graduation?

Campbell: I'm still trying to decide. I'm going back to Utah because that's where my family is. I've thought about going into a nursing program somewhere, but I'd really like to work with athletes, maybe as a strength coach in high school.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Campbell: Does spare time include school work (laughs)? Right now, all the spare time I have is used to study. My family comes out here a lot, so I spend time with them. I also like to spend time with my roommates and my teammates.
