DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Campbell won the team championship and Michelle Koh claimed individual runner-up honors Sunday in the rain-shortened LPGA Xavier Collegiate Invitational women's golf tournament.
A six-stroke victory provided Campbell's John Crooks with his 62nd women's career tournament coaching win and moved the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Famer into a tie with Mimi Ryan, who coached Florida to 62 tourney titles from 1970-94, for fifth place on the all-time Division I list. Crooks stands 2nd behind Dan Brooks of Duke, who has amassed 110 career titles, on the active NCAA Division I women's coaching list.
Now in his 21st year as head coach of the Campbell women's program and 22nd in charge of the Campbell men, Crooks has totaled 105 career men's and women's coaching triumphs, including a victory last month at the Golfweek Men's Program Challenge. His men and women also won the combined title at the event in a sudden-death, male-female, alternate shot play-off.
Crooks' women's teams have claimed at least one tournament title in 20 of his 21 years in charge of the program.
Koh was one of only two golfers in the 72-player field to shoot par or better on the par-72, 6084-yard LPGA International layout. Amy Anderson of North Dakota State shot two-under 70 and claimed the individual title.
As a team, Campbell shot 10-over 298 while leading the field with 14 birdies in what proved to be the only round of the event. Louisiana-Monroe (304) is second, followed by host Xavier (306) and Stetson (307) in the 13-school field.
A senior from Kuantan, Malaysia, Koh produced four birdies in her round and played the par four holes at one-under-par. Campbell junior Teresa Urquizu of San Sebastian, Spain matched Koh in both categories and tied with freshman teammate Brooke Bellomy for sixth place at two-over 74.
Bellomy, who hails from Ona, W.Va., played the par-3 holes at one-under-par, best in the field, and made three birdies.
Campbell freshman Lisbeth Brooks from Waunakee, Wisc., tied for 22nd place at six-over 78, while sophomore Kaylin Yost of Pembroke Pines, Fla., shot 82 and finished in a tie for 45th.
Playing as an individual, Campbell freshman Johanne Svendsen tied for 29th at plus-seven 79. She was even on the par-3 holes.
Campbell continues its fall schedule Oct. 31-Nov. when it hosts the Fighting Camel Classic at Keith Hills Country Club.
