After helping lead Campbell University to a 3-0 start in the 2011-12 basketball season, Trey Freeman has been named Big South Conference freshman of the week.
The point guard from Virginia Beach, Va., averaged 16.5 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.5 steals last week in wins over East Carolina (76-74) and North Carolina A&T (94-66).
Freeman led five Camels in double figures with 20 points (12-12 from the line), plus 4 assists and 3 steals, in a Nov. 14 win over Conference USA member East Carolina. CU defeated the Pirates in Buies Creek for the 2nd-straight time, following a 74-68 win on Nov. 17, 2009.
He scored in double-digits for the 3rd-straight game to open his career with 13 points, plus 4 assists in a 94-66 win over North Carolina A&T (Nov. 17).
Freeman has hit all 22 of his free throws to start the year, including 12-of-12 in the 2-point win over ECU.
His 22-point outing in an 82-68 opening night win over Houston Baptist marked the highest scoring debut for a Camel freshman since future Big South player of the year Clarence Grier scored 25 at East Carolina in Nov. 1983.
Entering Monday night's game at Chicago State, Freeman is tied for 3rd among Big South scoring leaders and leads the league in free throw accuracy. CU also plays Wednesday at Big Ten member Iowa and Friday at Missouri Valley power Creighton.
CU started the year with victories over 3 Division I teams for the first time since the program joined NCAA I in 1977-78.
