Volleyball Adds Four for 2012

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell will round out its 2012 roster with the addition of four newcomers, Sam Zuber (Sunbury, Ohio/Highland HS), Katelyn Layden (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill HS), Katie Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Green Hope HS) and Lauren Bewick (Winterville, N.C./DH Conley HS).

Sam Zuber, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Sunbury, Ohio, will head to Buies Creek after a stellar playing career at Highland High School where she led the Fighting Scots to a Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference title and a district finals appearance as a senior. Zuber was a third team all-state honoree during her senior campaign, setting a school record for aces in a season with 66. She also owns school career records for kills (852) and aces (179).

The three-year varsity letterwinner was a two-time First Team All-MOAC performer and two-time First Team all-Central District, earning both district and state all-star game appearances last season. The National Honor Society member also garnered honorable mention all-state honors as a junior and led her freshman team to a conference title in 2008.

Zuber's club team, Columbus Volleyball Academy, also qualified for nationals that same year. Zuber also lettered in basketball at Highland.

"Sam is a very athletic middle with good size," said head coach Leigh Mullins. "She's going to be in a great position to learn, with two experienced middles already in front of her. Our system very much emphasizes our middles, and her quickness and athleticism will fit right in to the offense that we would like to establish."

Katelyn Layden will join the Camels in the fall after a four-year career at Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, N.C. The 5-foot-11 outside hitter was a four-year starter for the Tigers, taking home all-conference accolades three times and Tiger Invitational All-Tournament honors all four seasons. Layden was also honored as the Tiger Invitational's MVP as a junior. Layden, a team captain, also earned her team's leadership and MVP awards during her career while leading the Tigers to two 3A East District Championships.

"Katelyn is an outside hitter that can play all the way around," said Mullins. "Her ball control is amazing, and like Sam, she has experienced players that she can learn from already here. Offensively, she has all the shots, plus she knows the game really well."

Layden played at the club level for the Jammers and NC Elite, gathering numerous awards as an all-tournament performer. Layden led the Jammers to a 17 Gold Regional Championship as a freshman. Planning a mathematics major at CU, Layden lettered one season in softball and was a honor roll student.

Katie Quinn, who will enroll at Campbell early in the Spring of 2012, is a 5-foot-8 setter from Green Hope High School. The Morrisville, N.C. native her second consecutive Tri-9 First Team All-Conference season, where she was also named her team's MVP. Quinn also earned second team all-conference honors as a sophomore, leading the team in assists and aces as Green Hope made the second of three straight Tri-9 runner-up finishes.

"Katie is a really good all-around player," said Mullins. "Her defense is great, and she's played at a high level with high level players, so there's not a lot of adjustment there. She took her high school team pretty far in their tournament this year. With her coming in after Christmas, especially being a setter, she has time to get used to our offense and our hitters, getting rid of that learning curve that most players have to deal with when they get here."

A five-year mainstay with Triangle Volleyball, Quinn led her club team to two-straight Junior Olympics, and an appearance in the AAU Championships. Twice named Carolina Region All-Tournament, Quinn also took home the Triangle Award as a rookie. Quinn will major in biology at Campbell with plans to attend veterinary school after graduation.

Lauren Bewick will head to Buies Creek from DH Conley High School, where the Winterville, N.C. native helped the Vikings to a share of the conference title as a senior. The 5-foot-7 defensive specialist earned all-conference honors and was named defensive player of the year in her final prep campaign. Bewick was also named defensive player of the year as a junior. She also lettered three years in soccer, earning the team's perseverance award as a sophomore.

"Lauren is a solid ball control player," said Mullins. "Her serve receive is good, and she's improved her leadership on the court, which is huge as a DS. She takes ownership of the back row, with is something we need after losing two defensive players in Kelsey Campbell and Lauren Garza this year to graduation."

Bewick played six years with the East Carolina Juniors at the club level.

Last season Campbell finished the year 13-18 overall, going 6-8 in its first year back in the Big South Conference.
