CREEK, N.C. - Campbell University men's golf coach John Crooks has
announced the signing of four student-athletes to athletics
grants-in-aid.
Andrew Gai (Westport, Conn.), Grant Houser (Holly Springs, N.C.),
Kurtis Straw (Johnstown, Pa.) and Jonathan Heytd (Mertztown, Pa.)
will join the Fighting Camel program in the 2011 fall semester.
All four of the 2011 Campbell men's recruits are ranked on the
Junior Golf Scoreboard.
Gai won the 2010 New York State PGA Junior Championship last August
on Long Island and was named MET PGA Junior player of the year in
both 2009 and 2010. He won four International Junior Golf Tour
titles during the 2009-10 season, when he finished second in the
points standings.
A senior at Staples High School, where he is a two-time all-state
performer, Gai also won the AJGA Deutsche Bank Junior Shoot Out
last July on Cape Cod. He is ranked number-280 on the Junior Golf
Scoreboard for the Class of 2011.
Houser earned 2010 North Carolina Boys All-State first-team honors
by the Carolinas Golf Association and Tarheel Youth Golf
Association. A three-time all-conference performer at Holly
Springs High School, he reached the quarter-final round of the 2010
North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship.
A three-time academic all-conference performer, Houser is ranked
no.-247 by the Junior Golf Scoreboard.
Heydt and Straw are the latest Pennsylvania junior golf standouts
to join the Fighting Camel program. The 2011 Campbell roster
includes seniors Zak Drescher (Landisville, Pa.) and Matt Moot
(Johnstown, Pa.) who combined to win the 2010 Pennsylvania Better
Ball Championship.
A product of Mertztown, Pa., Heydt won the 2010 Pennsylvania State
Junior Championship by five strokes last summer at the Hershey
Country Club East Course. In addition, he was the medalist of the
Boys Division K12 qualifier for the Lessings AJGA Classic.
The Brandywine Heights High School standout won the 2009 PIAA Berks
County championship and finished third in the district III
championship. He is ranked no.-501 in the Junior Golf Scoreboard
Class of 2011 listing.
Straw is a senior at Bishop McCourt High School, which also
produced Moot, who earned Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar
Award following his junior year at Campbell.
A three-time Laurel Highlands Athletic all-conference performer,
Straw also is a three-year letter winner in ice hockey and finished
among the top-10 scorers in the state. He won the 2010 Greater
Johnstown Junior Championship, where his 72-hole score (282) broke
Moot's previous tournament record.
In addition, Straw was a member of Team USA in the 2008 North
America Cup and All-IJGT team. He is ranked no.-719 in the Junior
Golf Scoreboard.
Now in his 21st year as the men's head golf coach and 20th in
charge of the women's program at Campbell University, John Crooks
is one of the top collegiate golf coaches in the country. In
January 2006, the Winston-Salem, N.C., native was inducted into the
National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
During his tenure, Crooks has led the women's team to 10 conference
titles and 14 NCAA Regional appearances. His women's teams have
earned regional berths 11 times in the last 13 years.
Crooks has also directed the Camel men to five conference
championships, including the 1999 and 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference
titles, plus three Big South Conference crowns. The Campbell men
made their first NCAA Regional team appearance in 2009 after CU
individuals earned regional berths on four previous occasions.
Named conference coach of the year 14 times for either the men's or
women's program in the last 20 years, Crooks' men's teams have
claimed 39 team titles and his women have won 61 tournaments.
Coach Crooks has directed 125 golfers to all-conference honors
during his tenure and 166 individuals to all-academic honors. He
has mentored dozens of professionals, including PGA Tour member
David Mathis.
Campbell opens the spring portion of its 2010-11 schedule Feb.
