BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell softball team (2-0) started the
2011 season with a pair of wins at the Hampton Inn Tournament at
the Eakes Athletic Complex on Friday, Feb. 11. The Camels were able
to win the team's first game over Virginia by a 7-2 score and then
took the second game of the day with a comeback 10-7 victory over
Drexel.
Campbell sophomore lefty Brittany
Arnn (1-0) earned the opening game start and was steady with
four innings and three strikeouts. She was relieved by freshman Olivia
Scarborough, who continued the outstanding pitching, with three
innings worked and two hits allowed for her first career save.
The Camels fell behind early to the Cavaliers as Virginia pushed
a run across in the second inning on Kristen Hawkins' RBI
groundout. CU then stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the

Miller started the rally with a walk. She moved to second as
senior Lizzie
Goldbach was hit by a pitch. A fly out moved Miller to third.

Stephan then walked to load the bases. Sophomore Sarah
Ling knocked in the team's first run with a single to right.

Michael followed with the crushing blow, a bases clearing
double, to increase the Campbell lead to 4-0. Michael scored the
team's fifth run on sophomore Sarah
Forgacs' RBI bunt single.
The Campbell offense added on with two more runs in the third
inning. Miller again started the rally and doubled to center. She
came in to score on Goldbach's home run to left center.
Virginia added a late run in the fifth on Giannina Cipolloni's
sacrifice fly to make final score 7-2.
The Camels fell behind early in the second game to Drexel. The
Dragons jumped on Campbell early with three runs in the first. The
big hit of the inning for Drexel was Paige Collings' two run
double.
CU cut the lead to two in the bottom of the first on junior Christina
Melton's towering home run to left field.
Drexel added three more runs to the lead in the third inning.
Collings started the rally with a double. Katy Harrington drove her
in with a single. Kelly Downes then walked and moved to second on
the pass ball that moved Harrington to third. Both runners then
came in to score on back-to-back pass balls.
The Camels crept a run closer in the bottom of the third.
Forgacs started the rally with a single. She moved to second on a
fly out, stole third and came in to score the team's second run on
a throwing error from the Drexel catcher on her successful
steal.
Campbell took the lead for good and exploded for seven runs in
the fourth. Goldbach started the comeback with a single. Junior Taylor
McGee and freshman Shaela Churchill moved her to third with
back-to-back walks. Stephan drove in Goldbach and McGee with a

Hinton loaded the bases again with a bunt single. A fielding
error on a sacrifice fly from Forgacs drove in Churchill. Forgacs
and Hinton both came in to score on Melton's single to right field.
Miller then doubled in Melton and scored herself on Goldbach's
double.
Drexel made the score 9-7 in the top of the sixth inning on
Amanda Bachmann's infield single.
The last run of the game came via the long ball with CU's Raven
Lee announcing herself to the crowd with a home run in her
first career at-bat.
Stephan (1-0) was the second game winner with 3.2 innings of
relief. Senior Katie
Woodcock earned her first save of the season and the eighth
save of her career with a scoreless seventh inning of relief.
CU will continue hosting the Hampton Inn Tournament and takes on
SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Feb 12 at 1:30 p.m. After the first
day of action SIUE and Virginia are both 1-1 and Drexel sports a
0-2 record. All four teams will have a game at either 4 p.m. or
6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening in yet to be determined seed
play.
