BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's softball team (3-1) has another busy
week on tap this week. The Camels will start the week hosting a
doubleheader against College of Charleston on Feb. 15 starting at 4
p.m. CU will then hit the road and travel to Auburn, Ala. to
participate in the Tiger Invitational from Feb. 18-20.
The others teams in this year's Tiger Invitational include Southern
Miss, Auburn, McNeese State and Western Illinois. CU is slated to
kick off the tournament and play against Southern Miss at 10 a.m.
CT on Feb. 18 at Jane B. Moore Field. The Camels will then take on
the host institution, Auburn, at 3 p.m. CT on Feb. 18. Campbell
continues play and takes on McNeese State on Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. CT
before wrapping up the tournament with an 11:30 a.m. CT game
against Western Illinois on Feb. 20.
The Camels have won three of the team's first four games in 2011
and earned the Hampton Inn Tournament title with a 6-1 victory over
Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Feb. 12. Junior Lizzie
Goldbach was named the tournament's most outstanding player
after she led the Camels with a .500 batting average, six hits and
five RBIs. She also scored three runs, had an on-base percentage of
.538 and a slugging percentage of .833. Joining Goldbach on the
all-tournament team was senior Amanda
Miller and Keeli
Michael, junior Christina
Melton and sophomore Brittany
Arnn. Miller hit .333 with a team-best five runs scored in the
tournament. Michael hit .357 with three doubles and RBIs against
the weekend competition. Melton produced four hits and RBIs to go
along with a .500 batting average. Arnn won the team's opening game
of the tournament over Virginia and came back to win the Hampton
Inn Tournament Championship Game the following evening with a 5.2
inning and seven strikeout performance against SIUE. On the year
the Danville, Va. Native is 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA plus 10 strikeouts
in 9.2 innings worked.
College of Charleston went 24-27 and 10-13 in the Southern
Conference in 2010. The top returning performer for CofC is junior
Amanda Lonergan. Lonergan hit .310 with nine doubles, three
triples, seven home runs and 29 RBIs in as a sophomore. The team's
top returning pitcher is senior pitcher Alexa Datko. Datko sported
a 7-10 record with a 2.62 ERA in 117.2 innings worked last season.
The Camels lead the all-time series with the Cougars by a 22-7
count. The two schools split the team's doubleheader last season.
College of Charleston won the first game 8-7 and lost the second
game 7-5. CU's Katie
Woodcock was the big hero in the game as she has a key two-run
double and picked up the win in relief in the second game.
Southern Miss is a team that split its four games in its home
hosted tournament over the weekend. The Eagles defeated Central
Arkansas twice, but fell to Campbell's conference rival Kennesaw
State in both of the team's two contests. Senior Jill Mathis was
the team's top performer over the weekend with five hits, three
runs and four RBIs. Junior outfielder Leslie LeJune also had four
RBIs during the team's first four games. Sophomore Beth Dietrich
has been the busiest member of the pitching staff with 10 innings
worked and a win. The Eagles are coming off a 2010 season where
they went 25-28 and 7-17 in Conference USA. The Camels and Eagles
have never squared off with each other.
Auburn (4-0) has started the season on a hot streak and won all
four games at the All-Alabama Classic over the weekend in
Birmingham. Leading the offense for Auburn is Morgan Estell, who is
hitting .571 with eight hits, eight runs scored and two home runs
for 15 total bases on the year. Sophomore Kelsey Cartwright has hit
two early season home runs among her four hits. Redshirt junior
Lauren Schmaltz is 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 12
innings thrown on the year. Redshirt junior Angela Bunner has also
been impressive in the circle for Auburn and is 1-0 with only four
hits allowed and no earned runs in nine innings of work. The Tigers
are slated to take on McNeese State on Thursday before the
tournament gets going on Friday morning. Auburn went 31-26 and
11-17 in Southeastern Conference in 2010 and made the NCAA's
Atlanta Regional.
McNeese State (1-4) started the season dropping four of the team's
first five games at the Getteman Classic in Waco, Texas. McNeese
State lost twice to Baylor and fell once to No. 24 Illinois. The
Cowgirls are being led by junior outfielder Claire Terracina, who
is hitting .385, with five hits, four runs, three walks and eight
total bases. Senior Molly Guidry and senior Lindsey Langner lead
the team with three RBIs each. Sophomore Megan Bond has been the
team's top hurler with a win and 15 strikeouts in 16.1 innings
worked. Last year McNeese State went 38-27 and 17-13 in the
Southland Conference and made the NCAA's Baton Rouge Regional. The
Cowgirls lead the all-time series with Campbell by a 2-0 count. The
two schools haven't faced each other though since 1996.
The Leathernecks (0-5) started the 2011 season with five losses at
the Iowa State Cyclone Invitational last weekend. Leading WIU this
season is sophomore Kelsey Michelini, who is hitting .364 with four
hits. Freshman Hailey Bickford has scored two of the team's five
runs on the year. Michelini has also been the team's most durable
pitcher with 18.1 innings thrown and 15 strikeouts. Last year
Western Illinois went 35-19 and 19-2 against Summit League
opponents. Campbell has never faced WIU, but are 3-0 all-time
against Summit League teams.
After this weekend's action, the Camels head off to the Pirate
Clash to take on Lehigh, Towson, Fairfield and East Carolina from
Feb. 25-27 in Greenville, N.C.
