BUIES CREEK, N.C.-After notching the program's first streak of back
to back winning seasons since 2001, and its most wins in nearly a
decade, Campbell looks to build on that winning tradition in
2011.
The Camels return four starters in the field and one on the mound
from last season's 28-27 team, who posted wins over in-state rivals
North Carolina State and East Carolina at Taylor Field. Eight other
letterwinners will also return for fourth-year head coach Greg
Goff.
All four of those returning starters in the field batted at least
.348 last year, with senior outfielder Cameron
Nelson posting a .396 clip during his junior season. Fellow
senior, second baseman Ellis
Lowe, batted .382, breaking school single-season records for
most hits (92), doubles (31), at-bats (241) and sacrifice hits
(12).
Campbell has set 43 different school or individual records over the
last three years, including 19 during last season alone, including:
stolen bases (119), hits (696), doubles (159) and fewest walks
allowed (3.73/game).
Coach Goff breaks down his roster and gives an in-depth look at the
2011 Camels.
On the
2011 season...
We're
really excited about this year for our seniors. We have some kids
that have been here for three years, gone through the rough times,
and have gotten this program turned around. Ellis
Lowe, Alan
Denman, Colin
Parker and Cameron
Nelson, guys have paid their dues, give us great leadership for
the first time in our program. I think that's going to translate
into the little things that we've been asking our players to do
over the last three years and we really feel like that's a huge
attribute to this team.
Biggest
improvement from 2010 to 2011...
We don't
have a tremendous amount of depth, but I feel like the quality of
arms we're going to throw out there is good. We lost some quality
pitchers from last season in Jeff
Rydman and Logan
Davis, but I feel like the stuff that our pitchers have is also
good this season. Last year we had some quality starts and really
didn't have anyone late in the game, and this year we're going to
be able to put some guys together that will be able to finish some
games. We'll also be able to identify some rolls that we haven't
been able to in years past. That should translate into more
wins.
On being
able to hit and run the bases well...
Those are
some things that we like our players to be able to do. I think this
year is probably the most athletic team that we've had since I've
been here. We have a lot more guys with better speed and that
should translate into more runs for us. We've been pretty good
offensively and we feel like that's something we will continue to
do. I fell like with all the guys we have returning and with the
new guys we've brought in, our offense has a chance to maybe be
better than the record setting teams that we've had the last couple
of years. The new bats may tone that down, but the way we play the
short game and run, I think it's going to be a positive for us and
I don't think we're going to lose a lot of offense, or take a lot
away from what we do.
We've added some guys that can really run. I feel good about our
offense. We're going to have to figure out what we're going to do
in the DH spot, but we've got some young guys that can really hit
and I think we have 11 or 12 guys that are going to be fighting for
nine slots, which is exciting for us. If our pitching can do what
we're asking them to do, it's going to be a really good year for
us.
Infield...
At first
base we have Alan
Denman and Josh
Holskey that are going to be fighting it out. Alan can also
play the outfield, but those two guys are really going to be our
mainstays at first. We have some other guys that we would maybe
want to move over there a little bit as well, like Bryce
Grady.
At second base we have Ellis
Lowe and Corey
Forrester. Ellis has been a starter for three years and should
be an all-conference guy. I really feel like there is a lot of
stability there at second. Corey, the freshman, has come in and
really pushed. He's a really good athlete and we're looking for
some great things out of him.
At short we have some newcomers. These two guys have a bull's-eye
on them because for us to be good, they're going to have to play
well. Ryne
Briley, a junior college transfer out of Washington, and Manny
Alvarez, from Miami. Both of those guys can play good defense,
it's just a matter of which one is going to swing the bat. I feel
like those two guys are really going to contribute and make our
defense a lot stronger than what it was a year ago.
At third base we have Kyle
Holmstrom, Erick
Gaylord and Bryce
Grady. Bryce could play some second or first, depending on how
his arm comes around. He can hit, so you have to find a spot for
him. We feel good about the guys we have here. Kyle and Erick, who
will play in the outfield as well, are both junior college guys
that will do a good job for us there.
As you can see, a lot of guys can play a number of positions for
us.
Outfield...
In the
outfield we have Cameron
Nelson, who will be our everyday centerfielder. Cam is a really
good athlete that hit well for us last year, so I feel great about
him patrolling center field. In left field, Jimmy
Brenneman, who played a lot of center in junior college, will
be our main guy there, along with Colin
Parker. He's probably going to leadoff for us, hitting in the
top of the order. Logan
Self and Joe
Turkson are going to be in right field for us, as well as Alan
Denman. Erick
Gaylord is a guy who will probably play out there some too
because he can really run and throw.
We have a good nucleus of guys. We feel great about the athleticism
of our position players. It's the best since I've been here. I'm
excited about having that opportunity. If our guys in the middle
can sustain quality defense, then we have a chance to field up
around .970 and we can do well.
Catchers...
Behind
the plate we have Blake
Boyce and Ben
Fish returning, and we also added Tyler
Hutchinson to the mix. I feel great about all three of those
guys defensively, and we feel like with all of them being so young
(two sophomores and a freshman), they will all get an opportunity
to play and play early.
Pitching...
We lost
some innings from last year, but I feel like our pitching is
better. We return Frank
Zier and Logan
Self, who threw a lot of innings last year, and those two guys
will be counted on heavily. Matt
Marksberry is coming off a redshirt year, and we feel like he
could be a special left-handed pitcher for us. We brought a bunch
of new guys in too. Jake
Smith could be at the top of our rotation. Ryan
Mattes is going to be good for us after pitching a little more
than 20 innings last year. He's a little bit stronger now, and he
throws a lot of strikes. We feel like he's going to be in the mix
as a middle reliever. We brought in Ryan
Koopman and Brandon
Wilson, two right-handed pitchers who we feel like are going to
be outstanding as well. They will have a chance this year to make a
name for themselves as freshman. They both throw strikes and
compete. Hector
Cedano had a great high school career and we feel like he has a
chance to pitch in the upper part of our rotation. We have some
good young quality arms that we feel good about. If our pitching
staff can stay healthy and we can define their roles I think we
have a chance to do well.
On the schedule...
Our schedule will be one of the toughest schedules we have had
since I have been here at Campbell. I know our players look forward
to competing against some of the best teams in the country this
spring, and I am positive that they will be ready for that
challenge.
This schedule will give our fans an opportunity to come and watch a
number of exciting teams that are coming into Buies Creek in 2011.
I hope to build on last year's record-setting attendance numbers,
and continue to have the student-body and the surrounding community
come out and support us. With the renovations that are on-going at
Taylor Field, fans should be able to enjoy an improved game-day
experience for each one of our home games.
